With Nikka’s new cd now on I-Tunes, her cool performance on Conan and her on tour, we share the 2nd part of www.drfunkenberry.com‘s interview with Nikka.  

DocFB: We have seen you play guitar and drums during your live performances.  Is that something you have done from when you were performing as kid or something you have just added?

Nikka: Ahh, I just mess around.  I just started messing around about a few years ago and honestly not trying to be a drummer at all.  I just think it is so fun and I think it’s fun for me, fun for the audience and it’s a good add to the show really but i am definitely not trying to be like Sheila E. or even say I am remotely a drummer.  (laughs)  You know, I just do it because I can. (laughs)  No one has told me not to do it so…(laughs again)

DocFB: I don’t really think you are going to have anyone saying Nikka stop, please!

Nikka:  Yea.  Exactly.  Like Nikka, get off the kit. 

DocFB:  Is there any instrument that you wish you could play but can’t?

Nikka:  Hmm.  I think the cello would be great to play.  Yea.

DocFB: Our first introduction to you was live at Prince’s Paisley Park Studios.  How did that come about?

Nikka:  He actually wrote on his web page something like Nikka come to the park and play with us and I guess my people got in touch with his people and responded to the email and invited us out to play at a celebration andI did not even know he knew who I was or liked my music or anything and I thought he was like behind some mirror or curtain like the wizard.  (laughs)  No.  He looked great. He was at our sound check and he gave me a tour of Paisley and it was completely surreal and amazing and he has been incredibly supportive and we have been friends ever since. 

DocFB: With so many artists getting into acting over the years, do you see yourself doing anything like that if the right role was offered? 

Nikka:  Yea, totally.  I have been offered a lot of things before.  Like you said, though, it has to be the right role.   I don’t want to do it just to do it.  It has to make sense and I am still learning about performing and singing and doing all that and it is still challenging.  But yes, totally I would if the right role came along.

DocFB:  I want to get political for a moment.  I know that you are an Obama supporter.  i was curious to get your point of view of Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin?

Nikka:  Hmm.  I kind of want to judge her abilities on what she says and what she stands for.  Let me say this, I am not into her.  At all.  Period.  I mean she would never be one of my girlfriends.  You know what I mean?  I mean I think it is kind of weird that she is a mom and be in office and at the same time I am glad that a woman, any women has the opportunity to run. 

DocFB: What inspires you?  Like someone that you hear or see that maybe you don’t have any gigs coming up but you wish you did because of that inspiration.

Nikka:  What inspires me?  Well, it could be anything.  It could be like a situation or a conversation whether it’s happened to me like my blood gets flowing or my heart gets broken, you all those kinds of things or any of those kinds of things, like emotional thing could cause a song to be made from that inspiration or see another artist be amazing and great and really say something and reach me that way that would inspire me.  It could be a singer or a movie or a book. 

DocFB:  Are you a morning person or a night person?

Nikka:  (With no hesitation.)  I’m a morning person. 

DocFB: Oh, I am scared of you! (Nikka laughs)
