Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, better known to us mere mortals as Queen and King of the Universe, join their clout and their production companies with Lionsgate to distribute Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire. Harpo Films and 34th Street Films will work in partnership with Lionsgate who acquired North American distribution rights from Smokewood Entertainment Group. Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire was a big winner at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, racking up the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, a feat previously accomplished only twice, and earning star Mo’Nique a Special Jury Prize for acting. The film is directed by Lee Daniels, and joining Mo’Nique in the cast are Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Paula Patton, Sherri Shepherd, and newcomer Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe. The story is, of course, based on the 1996 novel by Sapphire.

The synopsis here is from Sundance Institute:

Precious Jones (Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe) is a high-school girl with nothing working in her favor. She is pregnant with her father’s child – for the second time. She can’t read or write, and her schoolmates tease her for being fat. Her home life is a horror, ruled by a mother (Mo’Nique) who keeps her imprisoned both emotionally and physically. Precious’s instincts tell her one thing: if she’s ever going to break from the chains of ignorance, she will have to dig deeply into her own resources
