American Idol 8 Week 3: Top 10 Funk Out To Motown.

Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert

Now we are into the tour group, and tonight they are doing the songs from Motown. This is going to be fun to watch some of these people who have no swagger or funk doing Motown. I expect a night of bad renditions of great songs tonight. The mentor tonight is Smokey Robinson, one of the greatest artists to ever walk the planet, so I can only hope he can influence them enough to do a good job tonight.

Matt Giraud opens with “Let’s Get it On” From Marvin Gaye, one of my all time favorite songs. I don’t say this that often, because this doesn’t happen that often, but that actually gave me the chills. That was so unbelievably good. That was a great way to start the show, and I just hope the rest can keep up.

Kris Allen follows with “How Sweet it Is (To Be Loved by You)” again, from Marvin Gaye. Kris doesn’t have much funk, but what he lacks there, he makes up for in the little swagger he does have. He took Motown, and made it something very different, and it was really nice. I was a little nervous that he would take it and turn it too much into the James Taylor version, but he didn’t, it was something completely different, and I highly enjoyed it.

Next up is Scott MacIntyre with “You Can’t Hurry Love” from The Supremes. Scott has no Funk. Scott has no swagger. What Scott has is talent. The problem is, he is technically talented. Maybe I’m just being hard on him, but I am getting very bored with this guy. I think Simon made a great point that this was not a good song for him to sing. He plays this game too safe, and if he doesn’t step it up A LOT, he will be gone very soon.

Then we have Megan Joy singing “For Once in My Life” from the great Stevie Wonder. Now, Megan has some funk, but almost no swagger. What she does have that makes up for it is an abundance of personality. I kind of enjoyed it, but I can see what the judges were saying by how bad it was. Of all the songs she could have chosen, that one was probably not the one I would have gone with.

Anoop Desai is up with “Ooh Baby Baby” From Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. Noop-Dawg is one of the lucky ones that has both funk and swagger. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel him in the song at all. It did not stand up in any way to the original, and worst of all, it didn’t stand up at all. Can he sing? Yes, but he needs to start showing his own style.

Next up is Michael Sarver with “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” from The Temptations. Mike has some funk, but not a lot, and a good amount of swagger. However, that sucked. Bad song to choose, bad vocalization, horrible singing, and even worse rendition. I think we found our next contestant to go home.

Then, Lil Rounds sings “(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave” from Martha and the Vandellas. The judges were not all that impressed with Lil, but I thought she did great. She got funk, she got swagger, and she got skills. The judges were not impressed with her, but I was. That’s my girl right there, and she will not go anywhere this week.

Adam Lambert follows with “The Tracks of My Tears” from Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. We all Know Adam doesn’t have Funk, per-se. He does, however, have a crazy amount of swagger. That was stunning to watch. When you know Adam is coming out, you think you know what he will do, but then he goes and does something like this and just blows everyone away. That was absolutely the best performance I have seen tonight, if not in a long time.

Next up, Danny Gokey sings “Get Ready” from The Temptations. Danny has tons of funk and tons of swagger. On top of all that, he is a great performer. I will say this is the first night I wasn’t feeling him all that much, but he’s still really good, and he’s my boy, so he’s sticking around for a bit.

Closing the show tonight is Allison Iraheta singing “Papa was A Rolling Stone”, also from The Temptations. This girl is too young to have swagger, and her funk isn’t that impressive either. She can sing, but I’m not sure how I was feeling that one. Everyone else thought she was amazing, so I guess I’ll concede this one to the professionals, but I wasn’t feeling it.

Now it’s time for my prediction. I think America will put Scott, Megan, and Michael in the bottom three.  I don’t totally agree with that. I would take Megan out and put Allison in there, but it’s not my call. So there is America’s bottom three. From those three, I think Michael is going home. I REALLY want to see Scott go home, but he is our lucky player this year. By that I mean, every year there is one person that should go home, but they always seem to be better than at least one other person. This year, it’s Scott. It’s all good though, he’ll be gone soon enough. Maybe tomorrow. (I can only hope.) We’ll find out then.

i really wish the other judges (all the ones besides Simon) would think up some new generic observations before the next show

I adore Motown, but some of the song choices were a bit cheesy…such a vast library of classic soul they should have used this theme earlier on in the show!
