So we hear about what the media thinks about the swine flu.  Now we want to know what you think about it.

Is it the end of the world?  National Pandemic?  Something that affected the poor in Mexico but will not effect us as we have the vaccines and the medical means to prevent it?

I am very interested in your thoughts.  Has the media freaked you out or what?-Dr.FB

I’m not terribly worried about it but I will admit, when I ride the subways and I cough, as I’ve been getting over a cold for 3 weeks now, I wonder every now and then if people are worried that i have something, which i don’t. Life has to go on all we have to do in a case like this is have manners and cover our mouths when we cough or sneeze and if you feel sick stay yo ass at home. Plus, we can’t let the media influence us. We must live our everyday lives. Just my 2 cents.

It’s been a slow time for the media; they’re getting tired of talking about Pirates, and it was too early to start talking about the Great O’s first 100 days. This swine flu was a perfect way to create some drama and attract some viewers.

My company has a policy that if you are sick enough to take the day off, then you need to go see a doctor and get a note. Most people don’t want to pay the fee to see the doc, so they come to work instead… Then everyone else gets sick and you have a lot of people out instead of just one. OTOH, it is a lot harder to abuse the system and take sick days instead of vacation days. I’m not sure who this policy hurts more…

BTW, what did the pigs do to deserve such an insult in the caption?

Well, just like any other flu the people that will be affected the most and are most likely to die are children, the elderly and those with already compromised immune systems. One child in the U.S. has already died. And considering how inconsiderate people are when it comes to being in public when they are sick…it’s bound to spread.

I know some companies have a policy where if you are sick you HAVE to call out..or they will send you home. they actually want you to stay at home which makes perfect sense to me…..I wish people would also stay out of malls and stores and just rest at home and quit spreading that mess around…

hacking and isht on the elevators and escalators….yuck!

I think that as long as they isolate the people/animals that are infected with the virus and neutralize it as best they can, we should be okay.

As far as the media is concerned, they need to calm down a bit.

I think it’s way overblown. There are people in my area going berserk if they feel a little under the weather. It could be Spring allergies or something , but now everyone is paranoid that the Swine Flu has got them! It’s running rampant in the NY area so that news doen’t help.

Good grief. It’s just your basic Type A flu. You know…the kind they have a whole SEASON for every year. The CDC estimates that 36,000 people in the US die from influenza each year. How many Americans have died from this so far? NONE. The only death in the US is of a 23-month-old child from where? Mexico. This is not a concern for the average American. But from the hype, you’d think it was the end of the world.

Personally I’ve had to turn off my usual stream of CNN in the car and at home – I can’t take the hype and hysteria anymore. I think it’s overblown. The sad part about it all is that the initial victims in Mexico just didn’t get the early medical care they needed to fend this off; it does not have to be deadly. I appreciate the media wanting us to be vigilant and aware, but this propensity to scare us into thinking the end is near exhausts me.
