John Mayer: “I am sorry that I used the [n] word”

John Mayer

As you may have seen in our earlier post, John Mayer said some offensive things in his Playboy interview, including using the N word. In typical John fashion, he’s taken to Twitter to apologize for his bad behavior:

Re: using the ‘N word’ in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it’s such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged.

And while I’m using today for looking at myself under harsh light, I think it’s time to stop trying to be so raw in interviews… It started as an attempt to not let the waves of criticism get to me, but it’s gotten out of hand and I’ve created somewhat of a monster.

I wanted to be a blues guitar player. And a singer. And a songwriter. Not a shock jock. I don’t have the stomach for it. Again, because I don’t want anyone to think I’m equivocating: I should have never said the word and I will never say it again.

Seems like this may have woken John up to the a-hole public persona he’s been putting out there lately. What do you guys think? -Dr.FB

Mayer’s arrogance has always been a complete turnoff to me. I don’t like him or his music…as for his apology it’s a little too late as far as I’m concerned.

I just finished reading parts of the interview and I’ve lost respect for the dude. He comes off as believing his own press. One thing’s for sure, he’s in dire need of humility. No “hood” pass from me.

The whole thing is inexcusable. Beyond “apologies”… I can’t even decide which is worse… The hood pass/N-word or calling his dick a white supremacist. He’s not attracted to Black Women, and blames his dick, as if it has a separate mind? LAME… and he can kiss whatever “hood pass” he thought he had goodbye.

funny when white celebrities say it, they have to apologize ……the word is more popular now than it ever was, and yeah….some are gonna still use it in the racist way….and they always will….no celebrity apology is gonna change that…….sad but true

Double standards. African Americans can say it, but, no one else can.

I read the part of the interview that was up several times and I guess my interpretation of what he said was different from most folks. I wasn’t offended by what he said (although I think he might have said it better). I thought he was just trying to explain how he felt and that having a “hood pass” didn’t mean that he had to deal with the issues that Black folks do. His use of the n word was unfortunate, even in that context, but it seemed to me that he was trying to make a point. I accept his apology and he probably should be more mature and thoughtful before he speaks.

as i said before, people jump to conclusions right away or like to think the worst of people. john mayer is not a racist, he’s not a bad guy, he just slipped up and went a little too far. WHO CARES!! people do it all the time. but because he is *John Mayer*….”OMG….he is the scum of the earth because no one has EVER said such things”!!! bull shit. he is a genuine dude and has a heart of gold. people f**k up. it’s life. i think that the people who don’t get him as a person should really shut the hell up. obviously he feels awful for what he said and he recognized his mistakes. give the guy a break. honestly, i totally commend him for keeping it real in interviews and such. the ones who are so fake and phony…those people are the douchebags. leave him alone. he’s a good guy. people are just looking for shit to talk about.

love john mayer to pieces! and i’m gonna keep defending him because really, what he said isn’t gonna end the world. people just need to get over it and themselves.
