Sad news.  Rob Grill of The Grass Roots died early Monday.  The bassist, songwriter and performer was 67 years old.  He had a fall earlier this month in his Florida home.  While in the hospital, he suffered from 2 strokes.

His wife Nancy Grill released this statement on Monday:

“My dear husband Robert Frank Grill, 67, of Mt Dora, Fl passed away peacefully in my arms at 11:37 a.m. (EST), while listening to one of his favorite songs…”Let’s Live for Today.” He loved his fans and he loved The Grass Roots! Thank you for all of your prayers, love and support during this time.”

He will be missed.  A friend gave me a heads up about his death but the Examiner.com had more in-depth story on his life that you can read about here.  Our thoughts and prayers or with the Grill family.-Dr.FB

Diagnosis:  67 Years Old.  Wow.

I too had a childhood crush on Rob Grill. I had seen The Grassroots many times in my youth and loved their sound so much! I was so saddened to hear of Rob’s passing. I never knew Rob was as ill as he was. My heart broke when I found out we lost such a great human being, a great musician and entertainer. I have no doubt that Heaven is just a little bit livelier and their is one great jam session up there! One day we will all gather together for another great performance by one of music’s great entertainers. God Bless you Robert Grill!

I have loved Rob Grill since I was 11 years old. He has been an very special part of my entire life. I have been extremely fortunate to see him many many times over the years. He
has always been a kind, decent and genuine gentleman and gave his all in all his concerts- even though there were times you could see he wasn’t feeling well. I cannot put into words how much my life will be affected, knowing that my childhood crush has moved into the next room. Nancy, please know that your husband has a band of angels and he is safe and happy where he is now. Someday- everyone will continue on with all the joy and happiness…Until then, thank you, Robert Frank Grill- for the magic, the music, the mystery of it all- you are loved, missed, and forever remembered….the memory of the summer of love will live on in my heart-“New Jersey, you sure know how to throw a party!”

For me there was NO other band but Rob and his Grass Roots. He was always PERFECT, gave all of his attention like you were the only one in the room. I can’t count the many times I got to see him, had backstage passes, even got to go to his house for an after show party one night. Such a thrill. He has had so much trouble with his health and his families health in the past years, just not fair for one person to deal with. My heart goes out to his wife, Nancy. I got to meet her in Redondo Beach, CA, years ago. There will be no one taking the stage in his place for me, ever! Thanks for the lovely memories Rob! I’ll always love you, I always did. I’ll wait a Million Years.

The Grass Roots were the best rock and roll group of the late 60’s and early 70’s. I have their greatest hits CD in my truck and listen to it daily. Their music kept my spirits up when I was serving in the army in the late 60’s. Rob will be missed by all those who loved the Grass Roots. The music will live on!!!

We knew Rob from back in the 60’s when we (The Clique) used to play with them (Grass Roots) at LSU (Baton Rouge, LA). We used to always see the guys as we played our private party fraternity and sorority gigs. Grass Roots music is timeless and we will miss Rob.

Am so very sorry to learn of Rob’s passing, which comes just few months after his son, Christian, died. The Grass Roots were my first concert. It was in ’72, and Rob was awesome. Saw them several times since then. Rob was a great showman and a class act.

Nancy, plz know that his many fans have you in their thoughts and prayers.

We are so sadden by the loss of Rob, his talent will be greatly missed. My husband and I met him in Louisville Ky he had just broken his wrist but inspite of that he put on a terrific show. He did a special request for us and took pics and signed our cds. He was most gracious even though you could tell he did not feel. We will never forget him, the songs or the grass roots……We send our sorrow to his wife Nancy. May God Bless, we are feeled with sorrow today, Raymond and Anita in Delbarton, WV
