Legendary Penn State college football coach Joe Paterno passed away this morning at the age of 85 years old.

Paterno was coach of Penn State for 46 years until being fired this past November for a sex scandal that rocked the sports world.  An assistant of his, Jerry Sandusky had sexual abuse allegations leveled against him, and Paterno reported it to the athletic director, but not the police.

Shortly after he was let go, it was announced that Paterno had a treatable form of lung cancer.  He passed away due to complications from lung cancer.

His family has released this statement to the media;

“He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.”

It really is something that so shortly after he no longer coaches the team, he passes away.  He was 85 years old and still coaching.  He broke his hip on previous occasions and would still coach the team.  It is unfortunate this scandal tainted his last days at Penn State.  I do believe he will be remembered for his accomplishments as a coach and for what he meant to Penn State University.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Paterno family and Penn State University.-DocFB
