Questlove Frustrated Over Prince’s Youtube Stance, His Remasters, & Legacy

Questlove took to Instagram, taking a photo of a DJ program where if you look to the top left is Prince’s name and we can only assume that Quest was adjusting level’s of Prince’s early material which has not been remastered and several top not DJ’s such as Quest have made their own type of remaster’s when it comes to the purple one’s work.

For more of what Questlove had to say about Prince, click the continue reading button….

Quest was not done there.  He made this comment;

2 of his biggest crimes: 1) taking his music off YouTube–when this is clearly how an unaware generation can discover his genius. He will pay dearly for that when people shrug like “when doves what”? & not remastering his first 10 years of music. This ish is getting hard tryna match it to today’s sound systems. #frustrated

Now, we joked yesterday how we could not find a Prince video on youtube yesterday to go with a story but it is not a joke.  Prince has NO official Youtube account and his video’s are disappearing again.  2 weeks ago, a video I posted of Prince and Whitney Houston together was taken down although in the past, his people were made aware of the video.  It was used after Whitney’s passing as a tribute to her.

Quest brings up a point that many fans of Prince’s early work are frustrated with; no remaster’s.  It would be frustrating without fan-made mastered versions such as “Controversy” “If Was Your Girlfriend” and “When Doves Cry” to name a few.  Quest is right though as the younger generation is more and more finding out about music through Youtube.

YouTube right now is the *NUMBER ONE* place kids listen to music now.

When WE had a chance to talk to Prince about Youtube and his masters, it was something that he has put thought into.

We are not going to share that just yet but will say we agree with Questlove on this. It is something that Prince is set on.

We wish we could talk to Quest about this but sometime around the New York “Welcome 2 America” shows, we were blocked.  Not sure why but because of it, anytime he has something to say about Prince or anything cool, unless someone retweets it, we NEVER see it, which TOTALLY sucks!

It would be great to have a Blu-Ray release of all his videos and an official Youtube channel.

What do you think of what Questlove said?-DocFB

Totally agree. I love Prince and have for a long time, but this is the only HUGE misstep he has made in his career.

I’ll be the contrarian here. Why should he remaster? As a long time fan, I’ve heard the music, I know the songs…I’m not going to buy them again. That’s basically a gimmick the industry uses to make more money, anyway. Change the platform (vinyl to cassette, cassette to CD, CD to iTunes, DVD to Blue Ray, etc). If you’re a new fan..someone who is truly into his music or any other artist…it shouldn’t matter to you what “quality” you hear the music in. It didn’t to me, when I was younger…but maybe that was just me. Either way, it’s HIS life, HIS journey, HIS choice….accept that, or move on. Otherwise, you’re just bitching to bitch….

For an artist who is so focused on sound quality – not Remastering the CDs seems very odd.

he’s da Prince – he can doowhatheelike. The Vinyls sound okay. No need 4 remastering. The Vault Sonx & a VideoCollection on DVD would b nize. Yeah! NPG 4 Life!!!

When I want to listen to any Prince album previous to 1991, I simply break out the vinyl and there it is… LOVE the mix and mastering. Not so with CD versions of those albums, because at the time they digitally transferred in order to manufacture those CDs, the AD/DA conversion wasn’t adequate. The mp3s of all of that stuff are mostly taken from those poor quality CDs. As far as YouTube goes… that’s Prince’s prerogative as an artist, in my eyes.

Prince embracing Youtube and having his albums along with other associated artists’ albums remastered would be amazing, but if he doesn’t wanna do it, he doesn’t have to!

This whole “legacy” thing is a crock! Prince can go anywhere in the world and sell out an arena nearly days after a show is announced.

There are few artists who can do this from just reputation.

Even though he may have all of his music removed from Youtube, guess what? It’s not the only game in town.

Yes, some of his older stuff sounds really bad on C.D. Sign O the Times specifically, and I would love nothing more than for remasters.

I also believe an artists should be able to do as they choose with their art.

Prince is a musical genius and that cannot be denied. His artistry and body of work are only rivaled by Stevie Wonder in both depth and breadth of material. His music spawned more than a generation of copycats who continue to sample his music, which so many of the “uninformed” mistakenly think are original pieces of work by some no-talent so-called “artists” today. So any yahoos posting here saying that he is irrelevant and that no one cares about his work is probably some Bieber-loving idiot!!

Having said that, his paranoid control of his music and image are legendary and a bit over the top, which does taint his legacy. Part of it is understandable, when you consider that Warner Bros., and indeed NOT Prince owns the majority of his early work masters and receive the lion’s share of royalties from them. That is the major point of contention Prince has with his music.

LOL I laugh at how dumb Prince is everytime I run across an article on him. He is the biggest joke in the industry. Why people like him is BEYOND a mystery to me. He hates his fans, his music and the industry and is nothing but a heartless jackass. PLEASE let him just disappear forever like he wants to. This site is cool but they need to quit being up his ass all the time. NOBODY CARES about Prince!! Now, on to some other cooler topics and artists!!

Totally Agree – I Think the Transfer of Prince’s old Catalog to Cd from Warner Brothers is Alful! The Cassette Tapes sound better than the Tinny, Hollow Cds of his work from his first Cd all the way to Diamonds and Pearls.

It’s sad to think Albums Like Parade, Sign of the Times and Lovesexy sounded better on Cassette tape then you can buy on CD today.

Prince has completely Dropped the ball on not remastering his old music. Sad.

Remasters are long overdue. Prince’s legacy must be preserved. As well as all the tapes rotting in his vault. Prince does not care about the past but he should think about leaving this vast catalog of music for future generations to discover and enjoy.

I think he’s tired of people filling up their pocket with his hard work and dedication to make music almost 10 years ahead of his time.It cuts both ways though.Cause you cannot ignore the web(youtube)anymore and if there’s gonna be a site.Nobody has the money to buy the re-mastered albums, cause they won’t sound as dirty as they sounded back then.I think he should follow up and put everything he releases out on Vynil. You want rip someone and have the right sound in the end, vynil is the way to go.Why he’s takin the vids down is he’s own greedyness and mysterious way of communicating with his people.
I can understand the frustration if my music were put out on the web before it would hit te stores, but were talking bout vids that have been up on Youtube for years under different names and aliases just to hide from his people.Thats kinda freaky isnt it.I want my kid to grow up with his music, knowing him as the genuis that he is.But as the genius that slaps you on the wrist everything when want to share something with the world how great of a musician and artist/performer the man is.P you have grooves and grooves up on a shelve, share them with the ones who love you the most, thats US!!!!

    Prince is an idiot.

There was a news report in the U.K. today, that streaming revenues have overtaken download revenues in this country. And… CD and vinyl STILL account for the majority of revenue.

How would I interpret this?… Well, hardcore fans will always buy hard copies of their favourite artists’ product; but they won’t pay for digital files of artists they only listen to casually.

That’s the way it is, and that’s the way it’s always been.

Downloading digital files for free is like taping from the radio was, thirty years ago.

Spotify and other streaming services are more like visiting that one great bar which always had the great jukebox with everything on. Even if YOU weren’t putting coins into the jukebox, you still spent money on beer in that bar, while others filled the jukebox with money – and you listened for free.

    Absolutely nothing has changed.

I totally agree with QL on this. I just hope he sees this and acts on it IN A LASTING WAY. I’m talking about legitimate re-masters here. If he wants to put together another subscription only website to host them that’s fine too. But he simply cannot afford to ignore the impact You Tube is having on music anymore. But maybe he’s okay with his legacy fading into obscurity? He’s always been an artist who’s all about living in the “now”, maybe he’s just over it. Maybe it’s a task he plans to leave someone else after he’s left us? God, I hope that’s not the case.

Jeebus Cripes, I wish Questlove would get off Prince’s jock about his music. Seriously, I could really care less whether or not he’s frustrated. I will admit that when I got Garage Band, I would run the occasional track through the filters and see if I could get it to sound better–not the same as the remaster process, but other than that, I always figured he would do the remaster thing just like everything else–when he’s good and ready, and not until then.

Listen, Prince is going to do Prince. Questlove, as a musician, should understand that Prince still feels burned by the whole WB situation. However, something has to be going on in the Prince camp. No new music, videos are coming down again…sad times in the land of Prince.
