Howard Stern Reviews PRINCE’s New Single “Screwdriver”; “It’s A Home Run”

Howard Stern Promo PhotoHoward Stern has a Love/dislike relationship with PRINCE. He Loves Prince, calling him the greatest performer alive. His dislike for PRINCE comes from the artists declining to be on his show and a problem with the lights at the Gansevoort a few years back. When “Screwdriver”, PRINCE’s latest single was played on Howard Stern’s show, the host was in Love with PRINCE again.

Howard calls the song rock and says the song is not commercial, stating “its a really good song, I Love it.”

“It has a a ZZ Top, Rolling Stones feel to it. I Love it! A Home Run For PRINCE.”

Check out the audio of Howard talking about it.

We are digging it. What do U think? Do U agree with Howard?-DocFB

As far as the song ” Screwdriver” it is a great song! For me its the type of song I put on early in the morning and gets my spirit going. That’s why more people need to know about it. Please guys, its up to us to save the music. And Howard had it wrong, ” Rock and Roll is not dead”. Howard Stern made an unqualified statement. Only Prince can make that statement, because he is literally in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame so please Howard, lets be fair!

Listen when I say this ” Prince is thee standard for the Music, or the lack of a better term Industry ”

    NPG-Bearing them All

    Welcome 2 the Dawn

By the way if Prince puts out an album of 13 songs I am willing to pay $17 for that album. No matter what!! The main problem with the Music Business is that, because so many people try to rip P’ off that we (real supporters) suffer!!!

So I am simply keeping the faith.

    be well~

    Pharaoh , I agree with you 100%.
The only way we are going to hear “HIS PURPLE MAJESTY’S ( I say this with luv in my <3) is by singles & touring as well as the Internet .
The ONLY people getting airwave play these days are the Younger artists & those with heavy Indie Promoters ( as well as contracts & a Publicist) then you have to sign your life away. SOUND FAMILIAR????? (Emancipation?)
It all part of a business ( or a racket? ) you decide.
Look at how long lady Andy Allo has been around, hearing any of HER songs on the airwaves ? I think NOT!

Prince wants his fans to tell HIM what they want to hear & how much we are willing to pay.
So Prince SUPER FANS… Now's your TIME, to let your voice be heard!
Let your vote count . Let your VOICE be heard!

May I remind you of two group/artist ( off the top of my head) that self – promoted by allowing thier fans to record on cells n mini cams thier concert performances? I have been to more than one show of each. Lady Ga-Ga & Tokio Hotel. That us how thier fan base started.
Prince, if all we can get are SINGLES, & VIDEOS …. Then I am one HAPPY MAMA!
I'd gladly appreciate any concert dates as well from the ARTIST HIMSELF ( again said with Luv)
Been a fan for MANY years & WILL ALWAYS BE!
Btw, to those people out there who are "critiquing" EVERY WORD, NOTE , SONG that Prince does … Music evolves, it is NOT to be meant to stay stagnant & sound the same as any PRIOR recording . So to all you Nay-Sayers… Give the man a break & let him express his music as HE see fit. Not every song/album is SUPPOSED to sound like a release from an album/cd from years ago. Music changes, the same way each song is MEANT to be UNIQUE. Wouldn't it be a boring World if we all " LOOKED/SOUNDED " the SAME? I think not.
Who are 'we' to judge? If you don't like a particular song…. Don't listen.
Do you really want to be STUCK in a TIME-WARP? Therefore , stop before comparing one song from another. We are the LUCKY ONES that HE shares his gift with! That is my opinion on the matter.
Praise Jesus for giving Prince the INCREDIBLE GIFT & ABILITY HE HAS IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Love & Peace to ALL <3<3<3

And Prince won’t get airplay because he doesn’t have a Warner Brothers juggernaut behind him promoting and distributing him to radio.

Listen…Am I digging the new Prince song? Do I love it? Is it a home run? For me, it’s a 50/50 toss up. I listened to it with another lover of Prince’s music for years and we both agree that ‘Screwdriver’ sounds like it’s in a Demo state and unfinished. His vocal is also kinda shrill and my friend thinks Prince can’t scream like he used to. In this song, I agree. Sounds way more hoarse than say his scream on ‘Endorphin Machine’ which was masterful. Matter of fact, ‘Endorphin Machine’ is the sound I wish Prince was doing. And, a song like his ‘Peach’ has a bigger, more polished, yet full on rock sound. All in all, the new song is world’s better than 20Ten but needs work still. By the way, my friend thinks the lyrics aren’t all that. Being a fan for many years, she thinks Prince can do much better in production, sound and lyric. I don’t disagree.

thanks doc. thanks howard for taking the time in searching it out & discussing it. yes i do hear a little of zz top with sharp dressed man which is a terrific song from the early 80’s. prince met zz top back then & they gave him a little gift of them but i don’t remember. interestingly kiss was the first big rock band to meet prince & they were dressed in full costume. i would love to hear & see prince with just the 3rdeyegirl group only & have all rock. it would be totally different & so much fun. prince then later on could do his regular show say next year with the horns, which having the 6 horns & so would only need 1 keyboard & really don’t need the 3 ladies. i know they are at time fillers, but some shows they sang to much. people go to see prince, not the ladies. shelby is exceptional. the reason prince wouldn’t go on howard stern is because howard can be to raunchy & ask to many questions & prince wouldn’t like that. my favorite prince interview was neil karlin with rolling stone mag in the 80’s when prince drove neil around minneapolis in the ford t-bird. enjoyed the t-bird at lovesexy concert. also enjoyed bob george. still have great laughts when i play the song. i hope everybody in music will love prince’s output so he can be ever so big again. he deserves everything.

P has not lost interest in any of his music…he has many projects that he will let loose this year, his and by other artist’s. He, however will not be releasing any albums anytime soon. Only singles………Trust me…..if u have been following him the last 3 years (he’s been touring like mad) and exposing different people, then, wait till you see/hear what happens (like I said) This Year. It’s gonna be sick.
All I just said is the truth……………Patience………….again, trust me.

I just want to add that because of Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jensen had the hit she had with “Call Me Maybe”. Prince should get some of that love too.

I could give a shit about Howard Stern’s issues with Prince, I care that someone of influence is not only giving is kickass song exposure but the fact that he likes it and it could propel others to give the song a listen is a winner right there. We need more of this. Someone needs to get this song to celebrities like Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga, someone with a lot of Twitter followers to hear this song and if they like it, they can mention it and make the kids and others hear this song. This song NEEDS to be heard by the masses ASAP!

Howard went to the Prince show at the Gansevoort and because of a lot of rude concertgoers that interrupted the show and pulled out their cellphones to get substandard recordings to post on blowtube , Prince turns the lights down to just a trickle rendering Howard’s already famously substandard eyesight useless. Howard blames Prince and throws a celebrity hissyfit.
It’s nice that Howard is a Prince fan and is mentioning Prince’s new song on air.

Hey Teiemka, Prince did Leno and those shows for Lotus Flow3r right when the album came out. Within 20 days of the album’s release, he stopped promotion, did not tour for the album at all, and simply gave up way too early. He did a few shows in Europe, he could have toured the USA with a jazz/rock vibe like he did in 2002, but he simply gave up. Screwdriver? The song is ok, but 54 year old artists do not get airplay. 30 years ago if somebody old had a good song, it would get played. Today, you must be under 29 to get on the radio in most cases, unless you are Maroon Five. They still get airplay, but their day is coming.

I agree with Howard,it is rock,I disagree on the commercial part, it is if it’s played on a rock format station. Most of what the pop stations are playing wouldn’t go for it.They should try it though,Prince has enough fans to make it a hit. And then there’s the internet!

Reasons behind Howard Stern’s past issues with Prince are unimportant. That he actively promoted the song on radio is a huge positive considering that the main issue Prince has he can’t get any of the new material on the radio and to a broader audience.

Some people will point to Prince losing interest in projects and not doing the hard work with promotion, but you cant say that about Lotusflow3r. He did 3 nights on Leno, 3 shows in one night in LA, No.2 on the album charts and none of that material was deemed suitable for radio.

I don’t know if Howard’s criticisms of Prince in the past simply come down to being irked that he won’t appear on the show. From his comments around that private, small concert which he went to it would seem to be more to do with Prince’s severe eccentricities.
