What’s up with this, man?? Prince did all this YEARS ago with the same kinda footage in his unreleased Paisley Park VHS production “The Undertaker” with Michael B. on drums and Sonny T. on bass and Prince on guitar/vocals where the actress Vanessa Marcil comes to Paisley Park studios and after sneaking through the hallways, stumbles upon a studio where Prince, Sonny and Michael rip through a rock and roll, Hendrix-y set of guitar laden covers. After ingesting a handful of pills, Vanessa goes on a psychedelic ride while the band plays away. This black and white video with Prince’s newest female guitarist made me immediately think of The Undertaker.

Prince has been there, done that. AND, with a BETTER drummer (Michael B.) and bassist (Sonny T.). And, while Hannah Ford (drums) and Ida Nielsen (bass) with Donna Grantis (guitar) are way cool in that it’s Prince’s first all female band AND they’ve got musical chops, I’m thinking Prince is just treading water as he’s been here before with the unreleased “The Undertaker” recordings and “Lotusflow3r”. Speaking to a long, long, long time friend who used to work for Prince for a number of years, he’s not interested in the Prince that has an organic, acoustic drums sounding band and longs for the sound that had the Linn drum as well as all the wondrous instrumentation and arrangements that made his 80s music set him on the top of the musical map. While I agree with my friend to a degree, I also loved the “acoustic drum” sound of the Michael Bland era. In other words, I absolutely loved Prince’s Warner Brothers era. Strange that since he left Warners for his musical freedom, his music hasn’t sounded the same to me (or as good). The way Prince arranges, plays all the instruments and records the process all has a different, less polished, less organic approach for the most part. Although, there have been exceptions to the rule, like with the stellar “Rainbow Children” release (except for the lame deep voice narrator) and albums like “Planet Earth” where Michael Bland and Sonny T. with Sheila E. and Wendy and Lisa came back around and added their genius, Prince playing it all alone hasn’t had the same sound as his Warner years. Strange.

I think with Donna, Hannah and Ida in his band, it’s gonna put a much needed boot up Prince’s musical arse and while I’m happy with that, the music video teaser in both picture and sound remind me of “The Undertaker”, something Prince did over a decade ago. What’s up with that?

Speaking of which, I don’t know what Prince’s problem is. I guess he wants his video collection in record stores to collect dust. There’s been no new releases lately and ESPECIALLY, no complete music video collections as well as his older films that he spent $$ and talent on. Such a shame. Such a real shame. Here’s my top 10 of what Prince SHOULD release on DVD and Blu-Ray, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE…NO EXCEPTIONS…

1/ Prince & The Revolution – Live (Iconic 1985 show, previously only available on VHS, Beta and Laserdisc. WTF?)

2/ Sign O’ The Times – (Iconic 1987 film, previously only available overseas and on VHS stateside. WTF?).

3/ Lovesexy Live (Stellar 1988 concert film, inexplicably only available overseas on VHS and Laserdisc and NEVER in the States…WTF?).

4/ Prince & The Revolution – Parade Birthday Show (intended for release, professionally shot in fact, but ultimately shelved…WTF?)

5/ The Beautiful Experience (Wonderful Video album that had many songs interspersed with a story).

6/ Love 4 One Another (Another fantastic video album with songs interspersed with a storyline.)

7/ Gett Off & Sexy MF short films (Very cool short video films only previously available on VHS. Gett Off is a bunch of remix variations on the Gett Off theme while Sexy MF has a storyline attached. Hilarious and cool as a mofo.)

8/ 3 Chains O’ Gold (wonderful video album previously only available on VHS and laserdisc).

9/ Sacrifice of Victor (cool, vibrant live aftershow concert, professionally filmed and with special guests (only previously available on VHS overseas. Never stateside…WTF?)

10/ The Undertaker (Badass rock and roll live show with interspersed storyline with Vanessa Marcil. Think “Screwdriver”, only slightly better. Only available overseas on VHS…WTF?)

11/ Had to add this…a MULTI-DVD/BLU-RAY RELEASE OF ALL OF HIS MUSIC VIDEOS. And, I mean ALL, which would be over 100 fully produced, meaning lotsa coin spent on, music video productions…all wonderful, most unreleased and collecting dust in a vault, meaning out of sight, out of mind….meaning a few less souls are gonna be touched and inspired because they don’t have the opportunity to watch them. Music video release wise, Michael Jackson beats Prince by a mile and that’s a real shame because Prince has made MORE videos than Michael. In a music video release realm, Prince REALLY doesn’t care. And, THAT is a travesty to his music/video legacy and to his worldwide fan base, old AND new.

If Prince REALLY cared about his past musical AND video legacy, he’d RELEASE all the above 11. Since he doesn’t, it all leads me to believe that at the end of the day, while Prince is preaching that it’s all about moving forward, moving forward, moving forward…he doesn’t care and ignores his music and video releases of past. For him to be uninterested in his past as well as disrespectful of it is inexcusable and just plain sad.

I wish Prince would demonstrate his Guitar Brilliance more often to more people. “Prince Live Via Satellite” to the world(as Elvis Presley did from Hawaii 40 years ago) would be a good way to go.
