PRINCE & 3rdEyeGirl Take Things 2 “The Max” In San Diego! Night 1 Review & Set Lists

PRINCE Photo: Madison Dube NPG RECORDS 2013

PRINCE & 3rdEyeGirl brought the Live Out Loud tour to the Hard Rock San Diego Friday night for a 2 night stand that will consist of 4 shows. 2 of those shows happened last night at the Hard Rock.

3rdEyeGirl was late starting but PRINCE promised to make up for it and he more than did, performing for 88 minutes for a first show that was the best of what I have seen of the tour so far. When he took the stage, he was looking for someone..or someone’s as the case would be. It was 4 beautiful women ironically standing next to me.

3rdEyeGirl ripped into “Let’s Go Crazy”, “Endorphinemachine”, “Screwdriver”, and then a “ooh San Diego” chant mixed in with “Stratus” and then it was time to talk about those beautiful girls.

PRINCE talked about how beautiful San Diego is and that upon arrival, he ran into 4 beautiful women that all had beautiful smiles. He invited them to the show and said this song is dedicated to those 4 beautiful women before going into “Purple Rain” and those 4 beautiful women were having the time of their lives last night.

After that, PRINCE went into a beautiful version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” with Donna Grantis providing a crazy beautiful solo to accompany it. PRINCE then went into his vast catalog while performing on the keys and pulled out “The Max” which kept the party moving.

During “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man” he changed guitars and during the line of “It hurt me so bad when she told me with tears in her eyes” he took the guitar plug and pretended it was a tear before plugging it in. People went nuts for that.

PRINCE also performed an extra funky version of “Alphabet St.” which was awesome. For the encore, he brought out model Damaris Lewis to dance during “Nasty Girl” and about 12 other dancers.

The show was high energy and we enjoyed ourselves completely.

The second show kicked off with “Let’s Go Crazy”, “Endorphinemachine” and a super extended version of “She’s Always In My Hair” complete with “Go Ida” chants from the crowd on her bass solo. PRINCE then sat behind the keys and went into a soulful version of “The Love We Make” which transitioned into “Guitar” with him taking center stage again for the song. That was followed by “Plectrum Electrum”, “FIXURLIFEUP”, and then “I Like It There” which at one point made PRINCE lay down on the stage and take it all in.

Then PRINCE played “Purple Rain” and something happened that has never happened in the 100+ times I have seen him perform. PRINCE wanted us to be there now. Don’t think about yesterday. Don’t think about tomorrow. Don’t think about your troubles. Be here now. I looked around me and behind me. I saw there was a person who was in a wheelchair standing up with his 2 female friends and he was crying. I brought my eyes back to the stage and was there in the moment. I’m not sure if it was seeing what was going on around me, but….I started to cry. Never has that happened with that song with any other band of his. So Donna, Hannah, Ida, and Princah, thank you for moving me. It may not have been dedicated to me but last night, but  it sure felt like it was.

There is something special about this band and last night proved it to me in many ways. The crowd would not let them go and even wanted more after 2 encores in which he played “2Y2D” and “Cause & Effect” while director Sanaa Hamri looked on from the side of the stage.

San Diego, if you’re still wanting more, come to the Hard Rock tonight as there is an early show and late show before 3rdEyeGirl comes to Anaheim and Denver before closing out the tour in Minneapolis May 25th.-DocFB

I would absolutely love a new album… it’s nice to hear about these shows. I was in the vip during the Welcome 2 America tour, so I know his live performances are amazing. With that being said, I need some more purple juice to drink! Even if it’s on the 3rdEyeGirl website… any download of new music is much need now.

We made the Sunday late show and a day later, I’m still on cloud nine. He assured us that he would have us soaking our feet the next day and sure enough, my feet were killing me! The girls rocked it!! And Prince, killed it. We got there early and had a great spot in front row. We made friends with some beautiful people and just enjoyed the moment. Can’t wait for the next show.
Favorite songs- Hot Thing and the Maxx
Highlight of the evening- Caressing his hand while taking off his jacket <3 <3

Seeing Prince perform is like taking that first sip of cool water on a warm summer day…his words summarize the feeling…

    What is this new xhaltation
    That eye just can’t explain?
    What r these new inspirations
That eye can’t get out my brain?
How am eye gonna sleep with this feeling
    Rushing all through my veins?
Get up, come on let’s do something
Don’t u wanna go get saved?

    Thank you.

Makes me feel sad we didn’t stay for PR in 09 at Paisley because of feet screaming, having to get up the next day and other factors. Will prepare better next time, if I get a next time…can’t do myth at present. Oh well we got 4ever!

So HAPPIE! DOC that U had a PURPLE ROCK SPIRITUAL AWAKENING. It reminded me of when I had mine back during the Musicology Tour, I truly did leave ALL my cares and worries of the World behind when Prince sang Purple Rain. So I am PROUD to say that YES! I did cry BECAUSE 4 that moment I was transcended into Prince’s World and It felt Oh so RIGHT. So Doc I just LOVE to hear and read stories like this 1. Thanks so much for writing and sharing this PURPLE EXPERIENCE with those of us that CAN’T make these shows BUT sure would LOVE 2 be there I know I wish I was there 2 experience this. Prince and 3rd Eye Girl are Truly a Special Band 😉 LOVE U PRINCE & 3rd EYE GIRL!! <3

wow, the show last night was awesome. watching Prince master the guitar, piano and vocals so up close and personal was indescribeable really i feel blessed. 3rd eye girl was on point backing prince–they brought it. i had a fabulous time from opening note to lights on. the piano solo sticks out in my mind–just had the feeling we got to see prince at a raw and spiritual moment-simply lovely. ida, hannah, donna!!!

gonna try to make another show-cant think of anything else id rather do while in sd.

Wow, so glad you were moved in that way. I love when that happens. When I saw him here in Winnipeg, he came out to do one (of 5) encores and when his fingers started on the piano to The Beautiful Ones, I cried.

Thanks Doc, great post, I hope you are well!

Thanks, Doc, for sharing your thoughts. I’m happy for you that you got to go to both shows. Your writing made me feel like I was there. You’ve done great work on bringing Prince and 3rdEyeGirl fans together and reminiscing their personal experiences for each show.

    Best of health,
    Jason

Thank you for sharing this, Doc. Purple Rain always moves me, sometimes I have cried during the performance of that song …. Milan 20ten was the most emotional for me so far. I always think that it must be a special song also for Prince, because most of the time he plays the song with a lot of emotion, and he also uses it to say some moving things to the crowd. Always a special moment.

And even though I have not seen them, from all that I am reading I have no doubt that Prince, Ida, Donna and Hannah have a very special chemistry that makes for a very unique concert experience! I very much hope to see them in Europe!

‘Each soul has an encounter with the timeless.
Whether in music, in art, in nature or in love,
