PRINCE & 3rdEyeGirl Groove At The Grove! Night 1 Review & Set Lists

PRINCE 3rdEyeGirl Anaheim Poster Design By LV

PRINCE & 3rdEyeGirl brought the funk n roll to the City National Grove of Anaheim yesterday for 2 shows. If you’re smart and in the area, you will be at The Grove tonight for the last of a 2 night stand.

Out of all the venues I have seen the Live Out Loud tour at, the Grove is definitely the loudest. You might want to bring ear plugs. Don’t worry, PRINCE’s guitar and voice can be heard clearly on the Grove’s system. Also, The Grove is taking PRINCE’s wishes of no photography VERY seriously. They are on it. So seriously that I had to write my review and set list old school style…on pen and paper. Not so easy in the dark…and my handwriting isn’t exactly that great!

The Grove had their stuff together. There seemed to be a mix up with the wristbands for the pit area for the second show but not going to mention what it was so no one tries it tonight and I’m sure the Grove will have that in order as well. Classy V.I.P. area and treatment compared to Las Vegas & San Diego. That extra touch makes things that much more enjoyable.

I will come back in further detail to give a review but will say that both shows were high energy for 3rdEyeGirl and the Orange County crowd. During “Purple Rain” when PRINCE felt the crowd was not loud enough, he said “we are a little bit far from Hollywood, let me hear your voices” and that might be why there is no Los Angeles tour date at all (yet) on this tour. The industry crowd would be too cool to sing along when we all know it is better together.

If you were at the shows, please share your thoughts and reviews in the comments section.  Thank you.

In the middle of the 2nd show, the set list changed dramatically, as you can see below by clicking on the continue reading button.-DocFB

P.S. Special shout out to Tony Kanal of No Doubt who was in heaven with this band and the set lists. Tony knows his P shhh and was great being able to talk to him and get his thoughts on stuff. Great guy. Great musician.

As the ancestors witnessed, in a moment of clarity no peyote is necessary. Prince gets you “high” by permeating your intellect and senses. The Word.

One song I don’t see 3rd Eye Girl playing at all on the Live Out Loud Tour is … “Live Out Loud”. That’s a bit odd, isn’t it?

Doc, is Prince recording these shows for release on blu-ray discs or any other format for those of us on the East Coast, Virginia in particular, who cannot attend these amazing shows? He also needs to release his last shows in Montreaux.

I love all these reviews, thanks Doc! And what Anonymous said earlier is exactly how I feel about these shows – I get so excited just reading about what Prince is doing on this tour … it sounds so fresh and energetic & full of passion for the music! Thank U Prince for giving us all so much to smile about … even from far away. 🙂

Sounded like an awesome set and shows! Wish I could have been there. When I saw him from the VIP section during the W2A tour, My back was so painful it was “almost” unbearable. His music made me feel much better, especially when he knelt down to our table to give the girl a high five… he was mere inches away from me :). I am disabled with 3 herniated discs, and when my wife found out he was coming to our state, she paid for me and my sister to go see him. Those were expensive tickets but the best thing that I ever got to do. God bless you, Prince!

    Hi Doc,

I was lookin’ for you, but apparently I wasn’t looking close enough to the stage! Glad to hear you got up front!

On your 2nd show setlist, I think everything from When Doves Cry through Pheremone was on the sampler keyboard. And 2nd Encore starts with How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore.

I was at the 2nd show 1st night. The sound was great. The guitar miking was *very* clean. The keyboard sound needed a bit of help (and they did fix it the 2nd night).

But those strobes were a bit, uh, shall we say “overpowered?” I thought someone might get a seizure. We all probably left with a suntan. Seriously, you could see them with your eyes closed! And the extra-bright jumbotron behind the band, combined with a lack of front lighting, meant we were looking at silhouettes most of the night. I was at DNA Lounge a couple weeks ago and I loved seeing Hannah’s face when she was playing; she looked like the happiest person in the whole room. Couldn’t see her much at all in Anaheim.

Highlight of the show for me was the totally unexpected How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore. Just him and the keyboard, doing a totally straight version all the way through, reminding everyone that the man can *sing.* It was *awesome.*

Dr. If you can pass on my congratulations onto Prince for reinventing himself once again. This is truly bringing the funk back to the people who deserve it the most, his loyal fan base. I’m gutted I can’t be there in person but what I hear and see online has rejuvenated my passion for his music. Thank you Prince. Keep it going, you are making us truly happy. 🙂

I was at the second show and this is my 10th show and the best show I have seen. Prince is absolute genius. People complain about this and that….well all I can say is thank u Prince. The night was energetic, powerful and loud. Every song was perfect to me. If u can go to the show tonight- go….u won’t regret it.

ADORE this man and his music, all my life! So hate that I couldn’t be there! Prince is the MAN of music, and I’ll forever adore his music! Thanks so much for the review.

I was there for the 1st show. Doc, I saw you…I was to your left, at the rail behind the pit! A bit over in the corner…with no view of Hannah and the screen…but a clear, unobstructed view of Prince–who couldn’t have been more than 60 feet away.

I was blown away! What a show! Scorching hot guitar with a funk edge. Non-stop energy. Loud? Yeah, I agree! I probably should have had ear plugs. I was actually feeling the “wind” from the speakers. But I did not want to muffle the music a bit! So, no ear plugs for me!

My biggest regret is not seeing the 2nd show. As soon as I saw this post with the set lists…it was clear to me that Prince took a total left turn for the encore compared to other shows on this tour. I loved, loved, LOVED the show I saw, however–so no complaints…just feeling like I missed out on something special!! How long was the 2nd show?

Are wristbands for the pit SUPPOSED to be given out first come, first serve?
