PRINCE Spreecast Recap; Questlove, A Panel, & “The Beautiful Ones”

Questlove Photo: USAToday.com

In the latest PRINCE spreecast, we thought we had an episode of “Seinfeld” on our hands, a show about nothing. But in little to no time, that changed!

In a discussion I had with Prince earlier this month at Paisley Park studios, Prince talked about Touré’s book on him and said that he took one conversation he had with him (Back in 1998) and turned it into a book. “Touré didn’t like me the time we talked.”

For the full article click here…..

Prince said Questlove should write a book about me. He appreciated music and he would do it right. He said should. Not want. Should. He didn’t say Questlove needs to write a book about him and DrFunkenberry should help. My name was NOT brought up at all. Questlove should write a book. Period. Questlove. Not DFunkenberry. So all those trolls on message boards, need to chill the heck out. I should write a book now just to shut you all up. Ahh well. This is what it sounds like “When The Fans Cry”…and piss…and moan. Oh, and talk a lot of shhh. You don’t know me. Keep talking. On the fanpage, on message boards, or like the guy on Twitter below. Ahh. A cunt. Pulling out the classics.

We consider Dr. Funkenberry as part of our family over here at Funkatopia and we’re just an obnoxious loud cousin who speaks our opinions good or bad. I personally (Mr. Christopher) am very glad to see this side of you Doc.

We strive to do positive reviews and spread positivity and if a review is going to be bad, we just won’t cover it. That’s the biggest reason why we didn’t review Toure’s book. It was awful. It had tons of errors and was like reading a young adult book. It was horribly written, horribly structured, and a waste of ink. It strayed off topic many times times to non-Prince topics and in some cases never came back. Questloves book is far more entertaining for Prince fans and it’s not even about Prince, just his encounters with Prince.

That being said, keep your head up Doc. You are the undisputed Prince go-to guy and that will ever be disputed. Much love from the land of Funkatopia. F*** anyone who doesn’t see your worth. That’s a life lesson.

KOOL! Spreecast because we went more in-depth with this Subject ALL I can say is Toure and LA Reid is ALL FULL OF BS when it come down 2 Prince and his music. I am getting so SICK and TIRED of ALL this Speculation about Prince and his music. DOC I am so HAPPY and GLAD that you are in Prince’s inner circle because there is a certain TRUST FACTOR Prince has with you, so I TOTALLY understand Prince because he can TRUST U and that just doesn’t happen OVER NIGHT. The Supporters of Prince’s music need 2 understand that their is a METHOD 2 his Madness. My Question 2 Toure is How can you write a book just base on a Convo with Prince back in 1998 WOW that doesn’t even make any sense. I am a Journalist and I know I could interview and Write a way more better story on Prince than anybody. I really do like hearing Prince comment on this Subject of Toure and his book. And YES! I do agree Alan Leeds was the BEST Tour Manager for Prince back in the dayz. I do TOTALLY agree with Prince when I say Questlove is truly an Encyclopedia when it come to Prince and Music. 😉

Of course Prince doesn’t like the Touré book. His need for control is well documented. It would be hard for anyone to have their life and work analyzed like that by someone from the outside looking in, but to say that the whole book is based on one conversation (…”Touré himself (Who had a one time conversation with Prince in 1998 and that is what the book is based around)…” is disingenuous. That’s just an easy way for Prince and Funkenberry to try and discredit it. There are some unflattering anecdotes in the book, but as a rabid 30-year Prince fan, I came away with a better appreciation for the man as a human being. There’s a reason for his paranoia. Every genius is a little crazy.

ING, if you have to edit it down to one disc, LotusFLwer3rr, then that’s a problem. That means its not a strong album… and who honestly listens to it anymore or even remembers it C’mon.

And yes, WB era 78-94 forever!

ah, the Lotusflow3r bashers (& everything post 1987 bashers)…granted, as a package, it’s not as strong as some of his others, but you can easily reconfigure it into a strong single disc album by selecting your favorites…it’s all good, but kinda like getting the outtakes and b-sides and protege tracks included in the bundle, but since most paid $10 or less, can you really complain? I did one called “loutsapolis” that was about 45 minutes and rocked! People spend endless hours scouring for is outtakes, many of which are just ok, so why complain when it’s all included for your ease of acquisition?

Wait a minute… now that I read through the comments.. I have a tiny bit of time as I try NOT to dedicate much time to all things Prince anymore BUT let me interject Dr.Funkebery…

I can only speak for myself, but most people I think simply feel that they can express themselves a bit more anonymously without being marginalized or risking their careers even, etc etc. in many cases, they are “cyber-bullied” when identified. Its happened to me. Its not good.

An artist usually puts his work in the public eye and ears, this puts it up for critique, good and bad.

Just thought I’d give you some thoughts on that thing about putting real names behind comments.

I find it interesting many also hide complete discussions and other activities from the public view, much for the same reasons I suspect, anonymity and certain people with BIG MONEY to hire lawyers and such.

    Here’s a bashing for you:

I was going through my 600+ CDs and I stumbled upon a factory sealed LotusFlw3r I stupidly bamboozledly bought at Target.

And then, I realized i had 600+ better CDs to listen to and though, I’m just going to chuck this one. Can’t even sell it on eBay it only brings $2. Or maybe donate it to the local Library… yeah, maybe I’ll do that than toss it ANYWAY, just thought I’d join in on the bashing.

    Continue :^)

Freedom of speech is awesome. I didn’t block the person on Twitter and he misunderstood what I was saying.

As for that message board, you put someone in a negative atmosphere, they take stuff as gospel and become negative themselves.

The thing is, I have my disagreements with him behind closed doors and not in the public eye. Because I don’t publicly criticise someone, I am not qualified to write a book. Ok then.

The more people complained about something I was not even supposed to be involved with, the more it appears maybe it should happen. I would make sure there is an editor lol.

A blog and a book are completely different. For now, he wants Questlove to do it as do I.

If that message board changed and only allowed people to post under their real names or facebook accounts, we would see a lot of the negativity disappear. …….

It’s unfortunate and a lack of maturity that people grow 50ft tall when they’re anonymous behind the computer keyboard, smartphone or tablet, and all sense of civility is discarded. I’m certainly not condoning what Rob tweeted, though he did subsequently tweet that he made a major boo boo, I may add without apologizing. Certainly many others spout off for no rational reason and without the good sense to realise when they’re wrong.

I am a huge defender of free speech especially when a person holds a different view from mine they have a right to express it. The important matter is that it is done in a civil manner and that criticism is constructive. It is our diversity that pushes us through new barriers.

Many people don’t watch the spreecast so they’re getting 3rd hand accounts of what was said, there is also unfortunately a minority that are being mischievous. I saw the spreecast archive, only saw reaction to the “book” on the org, the reason most cited in the comments against you “writing” the book was that you were too close to Prince therefore it would not be a dispassionate take on the life of one of finest musicians of this or any time. I’m sure we would find consensus that a press release the length of a book would be a travesty to what many on the outside (myself included) consider an extraordinary music career.

Of course that’s not to say you would do that, but many writers and journalists generally are finding it hard to not the cross the line between editorial and PR(not Purple Rain). I’m sure you will have plenty of interesting material to share with us in the future if you ever decide down the road to tackle the years where you have been involved. Keep your powder dry, head up and keep bringing us the funk.

    quote (not mine 🙂 )

“Don’t worry what the crowd does Just worry bout being good at what you love.”

Finally, after viewing the video, I also respectively disagree that there was any Prince bashing at the Toure book launch in NY. Perhaps the analysis of the songs were way off, all the more reason for Prince to release the “proposed volumes” explaining his songs….

BTW Too funny Quest unblocking you on twitter in real time during the spreecast.

Yes Troy, we know. It is in on the front of the book. Prince is most likely coming at it instead of endorsing a book about me, you should write one.

I read the book. 156 pages or so is not covering his career. He deconstructs songs from 81-85 and spends more time on the effect baby boomers had on his career and things going on at the time before and after the baby boomer era.

This was a recap of the spreecast where inside it, I said I would like a book that covered his entire career, not a point of time. That would be like a 1000 pages. That is how I feel, and it is just as worthy as anyone’s. Just so you know.

Wonder if Questlove will take Prince up on the suggestion? Time will tell.

We appreciate you DocFunkenberry. Unfortunately, apparently, with notariety comes a lot of “ish,” don’t let that stop you from being you and doing your thing!

Not really surprised about Toure’s book, I read his drink the kool aid book and wasn’t impressed.

Prince is not going to go through with this for the simple reason, Proverbs 16:18. Plus it has gotten too messy.

The Touré book covers WAY more than the snippet of time he spent interviewing Prince. It’s a comprehensive insight into what made Prince an icon during a specific period of time. He deconstructs songs and albums and investigates deeper meanings and origins in his own interpretive voice. Admittedly, some of his interpretations and editorializations are a bit of a stretch, but they are his, and just as worthy as anyone’s. And by the way, Questlove highly endorses this book. Just so ya know.

I’m glad you are attending Dr. As we all know, Prince likes to stay in the now and they can only talk about the past. And a relatively short experience in the grand scheme of things! Prince is an intriguing man and, from what I see from interviews I have watched, seems like a nice bloke. That’s all I can go by. If Questlove is happy to take on such an honour, and I say that because I imagine Prince must have a great respect for him, perhaps he will be able to expand more on Prince’s ability as a musician which I find extraordinary and captivating. I would not be being truthful if I did’t hope for some insight into the inspiration for his songs such as Nothing Compares 2 U though. Nosey!

Questlove understands the music in a way Toure really CANT. And all Prince cares about is the MUSIC. Prince knew way back when, as he does now that as long as he focused on the MUSIC… icon status was his for the taking. Toure’s book was meh.

L.A. Reid took over Arista from Clive Davis in the middle of the “Rave” project and it was reported at the time that Reid told Prince he would never be relevant again unless he let hip-hop producers produce his music…and that was it for Prince’s relationship with Arista. In fact, I would bet a lot of the “anonymous record exec quotes” bashing Prince for being “difficult” (like the ones in the recent Billboard follow-up article on the Kobalt deal) are from Reid.

It’s about Vanity. She was thinking about going back to Rick James after her and Prince had their falling out. *
