Prince was amazing and the serious REAL musicians who performed such as John Blackwell, Cassandra, Marcus, and the Bass player were excellent as always.
However, Kandace Springs is not a strong vocalist or keyboard player. The REAL musicians on stage made it even more apparent who truly was a musician and who was appearing to “fake it till they make it”. Initially I wondered if she was nervous however it became apparent she was not a strong vocalist and putting extra reverb on her microphone would not cover up her vocal inabilities or the occasional wrong notes she was playing on the keyboard.
I applaud Prince for mentoring and promoting new musicians. However, it concerns me when a person is being promoted (hyped) and appears to not be a serious vocalist of musician.
I see posts of people who are saying how they liked her. I know in this day and time sadly this generation is not seeing the level of quality of vocalist and musicians from the Ole School. The auto-tuned, hyped, and pretenders who have a “packaged look” yet no true talent are pushed sadly today by the industry.
The TRUE vocalists and REAL musicians are the ones to be promoted and supported. Not someone who appears to be not serious and portraying one thing on a music video but unable to perform live. Let’s just say the Live True artist versus a Memorex Pretender.
One must sadly ask is this generation been feed such low quality vocalists and musicians by the industry for so long that to them it appears to be a great meal when in actuality they are starving for REAL talent. Have their ears now been re-tweaked/programmed to now hear a wrong pitch note and think it is cool. I pray it has not come to this point and I will always only support REAL musicians and not fall for the false hype and promotion.

The most important point in paradigm shift in the music industry is memory. Yep, memory. Older artists remember how things used to be, and are unwilling to ‘just give their work away’. Boo hoo, things change, adjust. In the 1890s, George Washington Johnson recorded ‘The Laughing Song’ over 40,000 times to cylinder; that is before mass production, and was steps beyond the sheet-music era (the great voices could now be heard in places other than live performances). Along came vinyl pressings and music lovers could hear their favorites at home; radio promoted many of the early performers. Various live circuits – Vaudeville etc. promoted performers before radio. Now there are thousands of ways to release music; artists only need to figure out how to make people care. Prince has plenty of material recorded, filmed, rerecorded…stashed away somewhere, and he will release it (yo Stella) when he wants to. George Washington Johnson’s ‘The Laughing Song’ was a huge national hit that remained at #1 for at least ten weeks – who knows anything about it today? Prince might wait so long to release a bulk of great stuff that most people won’t care.

And, while digital files are okay to an extent, artists should NEVER turn their backs on releasing physical products. Just go to Amoeba Records on Sunset in Hollywood where, unlike Virgin Megastores and Tower Records, they sell new AND used CDs, Vinyl, DVDs, Blu-Rays, Cassettes, Laserdiscs and VHS, you’ll see the physical format is very much alive and well when it comes to people buying and selling it. Also, FULL albums of material by artists are very much in demand by many throughout the world. The whole singles only mentality held by Prince and others is just plain wrong. People still want to be taken on a 11 song journey. As for iTunes, Amazon and all the other music selling sites, they hope people buy individual songs in MP3 format and they hope artists and the public alike will be conned into it all because it’s less work and mo’ profits for them. Lame. While paradigms may change, sometimes it’s a GOOD thing if some of them remain the same. Prince and 3rd Eye Girl are doing more harm than good to their brand and image and potential legacy by NOT releasing the new album already and by not having a definitive release date. Beyond disappointing on many levels.

Well I wouldn’t expect Prince to be dancing like the Nicholas Brothers in 40 years, but I’m pretty sure he’ll still be walking, and he could always perform sitting down as Les Paul did into his 90s.

RichardClarkRyder Weird Al Yankovic, and a few others, are smart enough to know that there has been an entertainment industry paradigm shift, and they have gotten gutsy and creative when releasing their efforts to the world.
Money for live performing is now much like it was from about the Middle-Ages to the early 1900s, when the only way to communicate new work was through live performances. Sheet music began to bring new work to more people, then cylinder (wax and other) recordings brought more music to more people, then vinyl, then tape, then CD, then digital… There will always be changes, and producers and consumers will change, or not change with each new paradigm.
Prince will probably make a lot of money from live performances for 20, 30, 40 more years. Once he feels like relaxing, he might ‘open the vaults’…
