The #2 MTV Video Of The 1990’s: Nothing Compares 2 Her

“Nothing Compares 2 u” was written by Prince.  It was given for a group he was working with he named “The Family” in the 80’s.  (More on them on the site soon.)  Sinead O’Conner covered the song in early 1990 and released a powerful video to accompany her strong vocals.

Prince won songwriter of the year for 1990 in a Rolling Stone poll for the song.  Steven Fargnoli, who managed Prince from the late 70’s til 1989 suggested to his new client Sinead to cover the song.  The song would catapult Sinead to super-stardom, something that she was not comfortable with.

Prince still performs the song, mostly as a duet.  I did hear him sing it solo one time and it was epic.  Perhaps the song is too personal for him to perform alone?

There are stories that Prince and Sinead has words about her covering the song that Sinead has verified over the years.

Regardless, here is my grandmother’s all-time favorite song and the number 2 video according to an MTV poll, “Nothing Compares 2 U” covered by Sinead O’Conner.-Dr.FB

I agree – I think her version is better because she sang it with real passion…. I think Prince’s version on the hits package was not as intense. This song needs that….

In all honesty, her version is better. The version on the Hits collection….not that hot. I also think fDeluxe’s (the family) version was also better. I remember when I learned this was going to be on his Hits collection…..I was thinking HUGH hit…..get folk out and pick up the collection………did not happen.

IMO – Chaka Khan’s version of I feel for u is better then Princes version. However, her cover of Sign O the times really sucked.

When fDeluxe(The Family) returns to Minneapolis in September, will Prince be nearby…or The Time(The Original 7)…? Will there be a “showdown”, a “battle”, a party?

It is still a longlasting consistent song… well..so it can be sometimes when artists write songs and don´t pay so much attention to the fact that ” here is really something for the ear ” ??? Yes it can be- Nothing compares to U- someone else mannages to see it better- E.
