Prince has just given the Montreux Jazz Festival one of his classic unreleased songs, “In A Large Room With No Light” re-recorded of course.

The track was played for the first time live in L.A. at one of his 3 concerts back in March.

Here is the info  from the web site:

Prince gives the exclusive Montreux Jazz Song
New version of “In a Large Room With No Light” by Prince – Exclusive to the homepage of the Montreux Jazz Festival from Thursday 15 www.montreuxjazz.com July.

Montreux, 15 July 2009. On 18 July Prince conquered the stage of the Stravinski Auditorium and agrees to the grand final to beat the 43rd Montreux Jazz Festival. After the surprising announcement of two one-off concerts in one evening follows another coup: Prince took to the Montreux Jazz Festival, a song on that one from 15 July exclusively on the website www.montreuxjazz.com for its entire length and can listen for free. With his jazzy interpretation of the song “In a Large Room With No Light” gives us the wonders of music from Minneapolis – accompanied by the band, with him at the Auditorium Stravinski will occur – a foretaste of his upcoming concerts. “In a Large Room With No Light” is a groovy mix of soul, jazz and funk, whose melodic structure entfesselnden in a guitar solo climax. The anticipation for the musical event of the summer is rising.

  7. Long Time Fan (Not Fam) Says:

I can only guess that the song is NOT as good as the original. Plus its probably a low quality stream also…

On one hand its cool that Prince has offered this long lost gem. The original had a great mid 80’s Latin Jazz meets California Jazz meets MPLS Funk. That fusion of Wendy & Lisa and Sheila E, whom I think played the drums, Wen and Liz on background vox, was magic along with Prince’s passionate and exhilarating vocals and band elevation towards the end of the song.

On the other hand, I have to say that there’s a big BUT, with this new version the song is re-recorded! Right? Im betting the new version has a lack of luster that the original had. As much as I dig Renato, he’s a top-notch musician, but I just dont see magic happening with the others. Im expecting to yawn at it.

I have to wonder if having Wendy & Lisa on the original was an issue for Prince? Does Warners own that original in someway? Is the original track lost and only bootlegged dubs of it exist?

  10. Kristie Says:

Thanks, Doc! This is one of my favorite Prince songs.

PS-I’m diggin’ the purple layout. :)

  11. The Source Says:

Nice choice of song, but…the rest has been said. Don’t mess with the originals…they captured a unique spirit and W&L and Eric Leeds are missed.

Rhonda, John and Renato are cool, but the original beats their version…

Bring on the original in remastered quality…then I would be surprised.

  12. justmemuchlove Says:

IDK…I heard the song…didn’t really care 4 it…read the reviews posted here thought maybe there was something I was missing….so I listened 2 it again….still don’t really care 4 it…I don’t know what it is…but I am appreciating the fact that we were able 2 listen 2 it… :)

  22. >>> Musgrave Says:

P R I N C E —– Thank You For the Classic! One of My True Favorites from the past…… Love your direction………. a True Sign of Great Things to come.

  23. OldFriends4Sale Says:

    Interesting
I hear people calling it a Classic, It’s not really, it’s a remix of a classic

Sound good, but I’ve heard the original and the chemistry of friends and collaboration is missing:Eric Leeds, Wendy, Sheila E, Lisa, Atlanta and a few others…

    For a live 2009 performance I like it…

But it’s missing the people & key elements of what made it a really quirky energetic masterpiece

I’d prefer a double release, go ahead a release a 2009 ‘live’ of this and a remastered(but unaltered) 1986 version

It’s a bit sad that the people who helped create this won’t benefit or take part in the performance…but ya never know, maybe the will some day

  24. Claudia Says:

I heard this song for the first time today and I really like it. No, I’ve not heard the original version so I have nothing to compare the current version with. It’s great that Prince shared this with Montreux Jazz so that we would be able to listen to it.

  25. Chocolate_Box Says:

    Beautiful Purple surprise

  26. Stymie Says:

I don’t understand him. Why not put the new music on the site that we paid 77 bucks for?

With my bitching out the way, I like this version better than the bootleg one. Less chaos.

  27. OldFriends4Sale Says:

Chaos was the reason, it was to express the issues of craziness

  28. Chocolatsis65 Says:

Maybe he didn’t put it on the site coz he knows poor single moms can’t afford it and I really needed a boost this morning :) thanx babe!

  29. strit Says:

    YES PLEASE.

    Thank you sir.

  30. violetsareblue Says:

I so can’t wait to get to Montreux ;)

  31. Toto Says:

  36. >>> Musgrave Says:

Hey PRINCE,……. Can we Start making Requests? How about the song,….. “Wonderful A_S” =)

  37. errant Says:

what an f’in’ creep. I’m glad I paid Prince $77 for his website to finance him giving away reworkings of classic outtakes to the public at large.

this on top of his goons sending letters to W&L telling them to quit talking about him in interviews has me about done with his ass this week.

  38. Bart Says:

I decided yesterday 2 play the entire 20-CD-set of “The Work” until I leave 4 Montreux on Friday morning (as some of u may know THE WORK is a superb collection of 300 unreleased PRINCE songs !)

This morning I put on CD 7, started cheking my e-mails, making coffee, etc. and while track 4 started playing (In A Large Room With No Light) Doc Funkenberry’s message appeared on my facebook newsfeed :
Prince has just given 1 of his classic unreleased songs to the festival :
IN A LARGE ROOM WITH NO LIGHT !!!

I haven’t been able 2 get this spooky “Purple Coincidence” out of my mind all day long ! Out of 300 unreleased songs and Lord-knows-how-many released ones, WHY is THAT VERY SONG playing on my stereo at exactly the same time I’m reading about this revamped version ?

By the way PRINCE : I’ve always LOVED the original (with Wendy and the totally sweet & very funny Lisa singing in the background) and I’ve just fallen in love with the new one too… Can’t wait 2 hear it LIVE !!!

  39. ~T!na~ Says:

BART – I always wanted that freakin CD set and never got it because at the time it was way too expensive and parents would not buy it for me :( . U r so lucky….

MUSGRAVE – I totally second that. Wonderful A$$ is one of my all time favorites and all I have a bad quality version that I downloaded from an unknown site. There is just something about that song that makes me… ;)

  40. SEXXYMF66 Says:

Hallelujah!!! ::Kat is jumping 4 joy and Prince is the reason Y::

    ~LoveSexxy~

  41. dreamcrusher Says:

Not as good as the original, but I’m feeling the jazzy vibe! P said on Tavis that he was gonna do a jazz record next– maybe this is a prelude to anew?

  42. Classic Prince vs Modern Prince Says:

Vocally the original, and musically, performance wise the song/recording has a melancholy-urgency in it thats dramatic and pulls you in. Thats lost in the new version, where the songs power is diminished with a light hearted weak delivery kills the spirit of the lyrics.

I think some may listen and focus to the chops and musicianship rather than the overall songs message or spirit so apparent and wonderful in the original.

What a great release though this new version. Just a great subject of comparison of what made Prince and his collaborators, his contemporaries at that time so brilliant.
    Thank you Prince.

On another tip – was this new version also a subtle jab at Wendy & Lisa over their revealing recent interviews? And or, Susannah & Eric with the Family 2.0? I know he’s cool with Sheila, but Wendy & Lisa said nothing destructive against Prince, rather are probably the most honest up front ladies and one can respect that. Susannah and Eric with St. Paul are making better music than Prince these days.

Tsk, tsk. Very lame if thats the case.

  43. Classic Prince vs Modern Prince Says:

Just want to add that this new version is NOT a release of a classic bootleg but rather just a song from the vault, weakened.

  44. SAmir Paris Says:

    One nite / 2 concerts

    Just got Back from Montreux ; this is one of the most important Jazz Festival ; Prince came there in 2007 for an Impromtu FUNKY show ;
THis time he he was more in a JAZZ mood ; Line up was SOLID REnato Nato Was like a fish in the sea delivering insane solos , John Blackwell
was in transe an Rhonda is definitly the Sheila E of Bass .

Prince is defintly plannng a DVD ( Lots of camera )

1rst Show : due at 7pm the show started around 8:00
lots of a rare tracks ( empty Room , somewhere here on earth , I love u but i don’t trust you anymore ) revisited classics ( Little red corvette as a second track with a mesmerising jam with the audience , lots of ballads ( the trio Insatiable , scandalous , the beautiful ones , nothing compares 2 u that he now plays just as often as Purple rain
a large place was made dor Renato , john an rhonda to express
YES the man has lined up the best musicians he’s bee working with this last 10 years ( Morris Hayes came at the end of the 1rst Show and did the opening of the second one . The Show stopped at 9:30 … Yes it’s a little short but i couldn’t help to think that Prince was nervous for it was material that he kew but he tried a lot a new things and this was probably very demanding ; of course he played an extended version of In a large room with no light ( the singing was fluid and amazing )

It seems that he realised that the crowd was a little surprised and the 2 nd show was more of a crowd pleaser adding tracks like Peach , When you were Mine ; hte best part being that stomping version of all the Critics love u in….MONTREUX mashed up with Housequake ( the crowd really went nuts on this one ; Since he played nothing compares to u , he ended up this one with Purple rain ( honestly he should now reserve it to stadium prformances coz the response is not as spectacular in a smal venue )

Prince is never were u expect him to be and that what make him so unique .

Now they talk about 3 concerts at the mythic OLYMPIA in Paris Next Week .it still have to be confirmed
    Come and See .

  45. Trash Bat Says:

Just so everyone can get the it straight man….da lyrics are NOT:

“Did U ever feel that life was like lookin’ 4 a penny
In a large room with no light?
A sophisticated man reduced 2 company in no-win situations
    That aren’t right”

    it is:

“Did U ever feel that life was like lookin’ 4 a penny
In a large room with no light?
    A SOPHISTICATED, MASS-PRODUCED CACOPHONY in no-win situations
    That aren’t right”

Give it a listen again, i assure u this is correct…plus it makes lyrical sense.

GOD BLESS US COZ WE PHONKY!
    Philly!

    Love,
    Trash Bats

  46. Grisell Says:

    Cool!
Brings back all hsi great moments of his career.
    Love ya Prince.
