Reader’s Digest, the publisher of the coffee table book, plans to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy to their reduce debt by 75 percent.

Senior secured lenders will exchange a “substantial portion” of $1.6 billion in debt for equity. Some of them will provide a $150 million bankruptcy loan, debtor-in-possession financing, to ensure the company has enough liquidity during its reorganization.

Reader’s Digest, based in Pleasantville, New York, said that the so-called pre-packaged bankruptcy wouldn’t apply to operations outside the U.S. and the agreement with lenders will cut debt to $550 million from $2.2 billion. It said it continues to be in compliance with its financial covenants.

RD is a monthly general-interest family magazine co-founded in 1922 by Lila Belle Wallace and Dewitt Wallace. Reader’s Digest is the best-selling consumer magazine in the USA, with a circulation of over 5.5 billion copies in the United States, and a readership of 38 million.

Let’s hope things work , and the famous RD is not shelved.

Borders and spend my last dollar on her book.

The Louis Vuitton Don will release Glow in the Dark, a book that chronicles his 2008 tour of the same name with photos of his international travels, shopping, and fashion shows he graced with his presence. Oh, yeah, and there’s probably a couple of shots of him on stage in there, too.

The book, coming in at around $50, will include a USB drive of previously unreleased music. Look for it in bookstores in October.

Stephen King: Rowling Rocks, Meyer is Teh Lame

Stephen King

Stephen King

Yet another in a long line of comparisons between the two best-selling authors JK Rowling (Harry Potter-do I even have to mention?) and Stephenie Meyer (Twilight). The fact that they share little more in common than reproductive organs and fat bank accounts matters not. Someone, somewhere decreed from on high that the world must be divided between Potterheads and Twi-hards, and lo it came to be. So pick sides, if you haven’t already. But choose wisely.

If it helps, Stephen King says in a USA Today interview, “The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”

Oh, yeah, and Rowling was just made a knight of the Legion of Honor Tuesday by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
