We received a most gracious email last night from a representative of Tavis Smiley’s. It completely surprised me and brought a smile to my face.
Here is a portion of it:
I would like to extend a thank you to you for keeping your audience in the know with what’s going on wih Tavis Smiley and his many endeavors, particularly with regard to Prince.
As many of you know earlier this year, Tavis threw his annual symposium and Prince performed a benefit concert at the Conga Room with all proceeds going to Tavis Smiley’s Foundation. Drfunkenberry.com made available to it’s readers tickets that were to only available through the foundation. Those tickets were $50 less then what the Conga Room was charging and it was our way of looking out for our readers, Prince’s fans and Tavis’s foundation.
We also promoted Prince’s appearances on Tavis’s show last week. During all this, where were the other celebrity blogs? Just making a note of things. I might say things that are unpopular but I do give press to people who you may not read about elsewhere. Not because I am told to or I am in someones pocket, but because I want to.
I don’t want to ramble any further. I am just appreciative of the email I sent. I do not do what I do for recognition or maybe my face would be splattered all over the site. I do this for genuine love. I can only hope you enjoy it as much as I love doing it. Thanks again to Tavis and his people for the recognition.-Dr.FB

Tavis update : tavissmiley Ended up taping two shows worth with Prince! Airdates are being scheduled right now. Will let you know as soon as they’re set.

We hear that Bria Valente will be doing an interview with Tavis Smiley this week. The show being recorded will be at a later date.
Tavis Smiley sent an email out about 2 weeks that he would be interviewing Prince at the end of April, although Prince so far has done no interviews on television so far for the LotusFlow3r project and it looks like Tavis will be no exception.
So from what we know and heard, it will be Bria Valente doing an interview with Tavis only. Just wanted to keep you informed and make sure the information we provide is solid.-Dr.FB

Tavis Smiley just sent out an email to his email list and it mentions Prince’s generosity and an upcoming appearance later this month on Tavis’s PBS show.
Here are most of the details of the email;
Dear Friends:
I hope this letter finds you well. I’d like to take a few minutes of your
time to thank all of you who joined in the 10th anniversary celebrations
of the State of the Black Union and the Tavis Smiley Foundation at the
Prince concert and the Gospel Brunch benefit.
During that historic weekend in February we were successful in raising
almost $225,000 to support our work of developing young leaders. Just like
you and many, many non-profits around the country, we’re feeling the
impact of the economic crisis, so we are counting our blessings that these
events will allow us to continue our programs.
As is common for some philanthropic individuals who donate to charitable
and worthy causes, Prince is one of those people who won’t tout his
contributions. He just doesn’t do it. He gives to give. In our case,
Prince not only donated his time but covered all expenses for the show and
mysteriously enough we received another donation matching
dollar-for-dollar the six-figure concert proceeds. Guess who?
By now you may know that he has released a new phenomenal 3-CD set,
LotusFlow3r, which showcases yet again his musical genius. The CD is
available exclusively through Target stores nationwide and retails for
$11.98 and is slated to reach No. 1 in record sales this week.
Because Prince has carved a creative niche for himself to own his music
and to market directly to the public, this project does not have the
traditional support of radio or a record label. Hence, you may have not
heard any of the CD tracks on your local radio stations. But these
circumstances should not prevent the public from hearing about or
accessing the work of an artist who is perhaps the greatest of our time.
So I’m asking you as our friends to take a minute to check out his CD for
yourself at a Target store or visit Target online at Target.com.
And in addition, later this month Prince is scheduled to be a guest on my
television show on PBS to discuss his CD and the challenges facing
independent music artists pursuing their right to self-determination.
Prince has given to our youth and I need your help to give a little back
to him.

Prince brought the funk with him to the Conga Room.
“Oldskoolcompany” kicked off the night again. Was that “Gett Off” I heard on guitar when going into the groove a few times? Slammin’!
At one point during “Musicology”, a dance party took place on stage with the likes of Tavis n Dr. West just straight getting down. You had to see the dance he was doing during “Play That Funky Music”, it was just too much.Cedric the Entertainer n Jesse Jackson couldn’t handle that.
Sheila E. Looked freaking amazing in a purple dress n killed it with “Glamorous Life”. Ooh la la.
The website was being shown off by one of the tech guys n people were allowed free reign. It seems like it should launch in March and some pretty killer footage is on it. I suck at mac’s so my experience was limited. ;(

This is an update of the story from Tuesday about the Icon, PRINCE playing a benefit concert for Tavis Smiley’s Annual State Of The Black Union Symposium.
We found out a couple of hours ago that the show will be at the Conga Room In L.A. at the Nokia Center. (We took a while to post to make sure everything was on the up n up.) The show is scheduled to start at 8 P.M.
Tix will be $300 (seated) and $150 (standing room general admission) and there is a 4 ticket limit.

I have never heard of this site before but went through it all without purchasing the tickets. It seems secure but be careful is all I can say. Anyone wanna pick up my ticket tab? =-)
