Purple Rumor Mill…Prince & Youtube Reach Agreement?

If this rumor is true, it is unprecedented.

We are hearing rumors that Youtube is now paying Prince to have his music on their site.

Prince, a long standing opponent of youtube, may have finally reached an agreement with the popular video web site.  Lately, Prince’s latest videos and songs have been getting posted on youtube (but wanting the videos not to be posted elsewhere and has disabled the embed code to post on various web sites.)  So he may be easing off on them.

I think it is a GREAT decision. I have always been a supporter of youtube and if radio doesn’t play your stuff or MTV is too busy showing an episode of the Hills, youtube is an amazing promotional tool.

What do you guys think of this decision?

I don’t really care if it took Youtube to pay Prince, just glad he is open to the usage of it.-Dr.FB

My God, my prayers are starting to be realized! This is amazing if true. Prince videos belong on a site like youtube. I didn’t realize the power of youtube until Michael Jackson’s death and seeing how many people viewed his videos. Prince has a great musical legacy and I would hope that Prince will let his legacy live on through his videos on this great site. The kids need to know greatness and Prince is one of the true greats. I’m very happy with this apparent change of heart. God is good.

  7. noname Says:

Maybe he finally realizes that his own site is so piss poor no one is trying to pay $77 to watch his videos there.

  8. bluerose7 Says:

Sounds good to me…if youtube wants to play, then they should pay.

  9. RedKnight Says:

‘…or MTV is too busy showing an episode of the Hills, ‘ –

I completely agree with you Mr. Funkenberry, what else do we as a music world do we have left?

  10. PEJ Says:

HA as rdhull said Prince won! he deserves to get paid and I hope he got his way. and we as fans get to enjoy watching his vids (hopefully) as much as we please

  11. Candyman Says:

if this is true, congrats prince!! continue fighting for what u believe in ;-)

  12. DigMeNow Says:

Since most Lotusflow3r members are NOT happy with what they received for paying $77 membership fee…It is logical that the next step would be to find another way to market his videos to a paying customer…ie…You Tube. I think Mr. Nelson busted the pockets of a lot of fans..oh well.

Don’t get me wrong, he should get paid for what he created. But I also think the Lotusflow3r website isn’t what it was promoted to be. It opened strong and now it’s rather a disappointment.

  13. DualBoot Says:

It’s great to use such a powerful promotional tool as youtube to reach out and let the music touch the hearts and minds of many with Prince’s music.

However it is a pity that payment is necessary for songs to be heard or seen. For someone who always claimed that songs are his children money always seems in the way leading to holding those children locked in the tower. Prince’s view on money and control hinder his songs to blossom and flourish out there like children that are kept inside. I know this is a broader issue which also touches the stuff in his vault like al those historic (live) recordings that seem to die in there. Prince was paid for those songs and performances and like the man said in the 90′s music should be free. At one point you have to release your ‘children’ or song, give them the right to be out there and give everybody the opportunity to enjoy them. The part of the songs being out there on you tube is the positive part…

  14. Modernaire Says:

Now wait a minute… funny how I noticed a lot of classic footage from TV suddenly pop up there in almost HD quality when you know that real fans used old mono-Sunbeam VCRs back in the day with antenna’s and shit.

Please. Im looking at the 1990 AMA acceptance speech and my god, its almost crystal clear flawless video and audio…

So now, lets see, then Prince once striking up a deal with YouTube, gets then paid for ANY footage of him regardless if he really OWNS the actual footage?

Wouldn’t Dick Clark or ABC or whatever own that footage of Prince at the AMA’s? Not Prince…so he’s figured a way on how to get paid for his image… my god! Amazing.

Look up some rare Prince on there – ie – ’87 SOTT 1st Avenue preview show – near flawless video and audio, the likes never seen in hardcore fam/fan trading circles.

    Go…do a search…

    NICE MOOOVE…. FORGET I paid 77 2 lotusflow3r.com. NOT COOOOL

  16. André Says:

    GREAT NEWS
This is indeed great news besides making perfect business sense.
There are so much high quality stuff that needs to get out there and a strong demand for high quality videos. Youtube is the best Direct channel for any artists to reach an audience. Nothing wrong with the Lotusflow3r website but this is the best way to reach a mass audience. Of course he should get paid for publishing his videos or music through YouTube as his HQ videos adds value to YouTube and YouTube makes money from advertising. He’s probably worth every penny they pay him.

But he needs to do more with the Lotusflow3r site…. (add videos, music, ticket pre-sales…)

  17. fam Says:

    FINALLY!

  18. Lovenharmony Says:

I would’ve like to seen them on the Lotusflow3r site, but I’ll take what I can get!

  19. CynthiaRose64 Says:

Fantastic, it’s about time, we have been waiting for Prince to do something like this for such a long time. Prince is the man, we love him and his music and just want his genius to be everywhere.

    whooo hooo!!!

  20. maddladd Says:

I can download youtube!!! Wooooo Hooooo!!!

  21. PurpleTrekkie Says:

I hope they’re not paying him :smh:

he can’t just hire (and pay) somebody to post his videos on an official Prince youtube account and just disable embedding -??

  22. NakedMuscl3 Says:

    We love Prince.

  23. Chocolate_Box Says:

Gr8 move Prince. U still paving way 4 artist 2 get the profits they deserve 4rm there music they created. I’m sure this will b headlining news in a few days…

  24. CJanssen Says:

Wait, do all the others also get paid to have their music played?
Do you think all the other artists will just sit quiet and let Youtube pay Prince but not them?

I love Prince and am happy to see his stuff back on Youtube but think this is a little bit strange.

Or do we have to pay Youtube in the near future….

  25. Modernaire Says:

^^ ….yeah, especially when Prince wasnt the producer of the show like any award show, TV news media footage…which really he does not own.

Again – note the sudden pristine HD-like quality videos from back in the day. Thats pro-level copy or recordings – not a regular teen fam with a Zenith mono-VCR…

Who wouldn’t be happy with that? One it’s great for fans and people all over the globe especially young people/kids who could get inspired by seeing Prince and wanting to follow suite. Secondly, if Prince is getting paid it’s a win/win situation.

youtube is the new m-tv. It’s from pure folks and not all the commercial ********

We love certain youtube channels now don’t we :) :) :) Ta for the update Doc. How’s the cough doing?

  36. Michael... Says:

Funkteer Said it best: “He is worth every penny they will pay him.”

This is because they are not nor will not pay him.

Prince is in a downward karmick spiral. The album he’s making with another producer will belly up as he goes toward facedown more.

    It’s the path he’s chosen.

  37. ~T!na~ Says:

I feel like I won the lottery and have been on youtube for hours watching stuff I havent seen 4 a while and never seen b4 interviews and footage that I missed….Love it!!!! Thank you Prince…

  38. Brent Says:

Yeah, This has got to be a rumor. Youtube doesn’t need Prince he needs Youtube. Youtube forever keeps you brand on the minds of people. This why nobody who has a brain cares that Youtube doesn’t pay them. Myself I’ve works of band from the past that has renewed my interest. In 2 week I’m going to see Squeeze live. I’ve wanted to see them for 30yrs and never got around to it. I was looking at an old video of Split Enz and saw their video click on it. Voila rediscovered a great band. They just made $49.50 the price of tickets and I’ll most like buy a T-shirt.

If I were Prince I would be posting all kinds of stuff that no one has ever seen. Totally promote and watch the people eat it up.
