Robyne Robinson broke the news at the local fox affiliate in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that PRINCE was set to debut a Minnesota Vikings fight song tonight. The song is entitled “Purple & Gold.”
Prince has been seen at a few Vikings football game and may have been inspired by Brett Favre n the way they manhandled the Cowboys on Sunday. Shoot, I hope it replaces Brett singing “Pants On The Ground” for sure.
Prince had this to say to FOX9:
“I saw the future,” said Prince.
He said he went home that night, wrote the song, “Purple and Gold,” and said it came easy and fast.
Check out the song above and let me know what you think.-Dr.FB
Update: here are the lyrics to the Vikings fight song entitled “Purple & Gold”
Purple and Gold Lyrics
the veil of the sky draws open
the roar of the chariots touch down
we r the ones who have now come again
and walk upon water like solid ground
as we approach the throne we won’t bow down
this time we won’t b denied
raise every voice and let it b known
in the name of the purple and gold
we come in the name of the purple and gold
all of the odds r in r favor
no prediction 2 bold
we r the truth if the truth can b told
long reign the purple and gold
the eyes say ready 4 battle
no need 4 sword in hand
we r all amped up like a rock n roll band
ready 2 celebrate every score
ready 2 fight the elegant war
ready 2 hear the crowd roar
that’s what we came 4
and so much more
in the name of the purple and gold
r spirits may b tired
r bodies may b worn
but since this day is r destiny
r history – that’s y we must b
4ever strong as the wind that blows the Vikings’ horn
in the name of the purple and gold
CHORUS

Thanks for the news Doc!

Possible songs titles: Purple Reign 2. Three men and a Mullett. Takin care of Breesy in the Big Easy.Farve 4 U.How come U don’t call an audible.Superfunkycalifragikleinsasser.
How Bout BLACK RAIN on the Purple Pain or All that Glitters is a Saint or Cleatin’ Down da Blouses or Viks R Dikes??? WHO DAT!!
THAT SONG IS STRAIGHT UP BOOTY!!! YUCK!!!
WHO DAT!!!
oh man, Purple & Gold sounds like the song Graffiti Bridge..and i’m sorry to say it’s soo weak! i love Prince, but he should replace it before Sunday’s game. No one wants to hear that at a Football game. yikes!
I’ve a feeling the Vikings WILL fight when they hear that song. There may not be another team around when they do… but !!
I love Prince, but that’s just terrible. What was he thinking?
Well all rightee then….
well maybe theres a kick ass guitar solo in the middle so im stil courious to here the full song
I’m a Prince and Vikings fan and that song straight up STUNK!!! You can’t fight or play football after that song!!! Come on Prince. Get a little DREAMER inspiration in the song!!! GUITAR, GUITAR, GUITAR!!!!
That is so much more deliciously awful than I could have ever anticipated.
Yo, Prince! When’s your song for Haiti coming out? Yeah, I thought so.
wow…..look how many people fell for your joke Doc……..u got a lot of smart followers there….way to go!!
Listened to it again and just realized … Jehovah’s Witness.. It reminds me of the music at the Kingdom Hall where I used to take my Grandmother every Easter ( Passover)….mmmmm Be Interested in hearing it in it’s completion..
At least he did it for the home team.
Bit of a sell out move but he’s been on that path for awhile.
I ain’t mad at him though. Nto for this at least
Are we being punked? Where is Aston???
Seriously, Prince better answer the phone for Haiti!!!
As far as a “fight” song, I was ready to fight when I heard it! So I guess it works the way it should.
man…. come on.. that is the wackest crap ever…i belive that it came to him quick…this is a classic example of when no one will tell a guy the truth.
I blame his homeboys who listened to it and said.. yeah, Prince..that’s the one.. IT’S NOT!!
but, Bria is cute…and yup, I’d hit it.
Lets look at it for what it is, a fight song in the traditional sense. Most “fight songs” especially college fight songs are song like hymns.
I think it is a demo not to be sang by Prince himself, but for what it was written for.
Here’s my 2¢…musically, it’s the traditional (slow) beat of a school fight song. My high school fight had similar tempo. It’s not meant to be funky or for radio play. Now, u can spice it up a bit similar to what the kids sung the school’s fight song in the movie “Lean on Me”. Otherwise, in this day and age of MTV, FB and Youtube, it’s not catchy or funky enough for the youth mindset. Besides…Imma SAINTS fan! And we gonna make the purple and gold turn into BLACK and GOLD this Sunday!! WHO DAT!! WE DAT!! GEAUX SAINTS!!!
That song was good. Good at being TERRIBLE.
I was on the phone w/ my Mom when it came on and I told her…it sounds like a College Anthem song or a hymnal song sung in church. I then read the lyrics and will say…the lyrics are simple but pretty col for a “fight” song, but unfortunately the song when sung is pretty weak….pretty damn week. Call me crazy, but I was expecting a little more BITE in the Fight…..something along the lines of Fury or Guitar! I just don’t think it is something the Viking are gunna listen to in the locker room before the big game to GET FIRED UP!
GO VIKINGS!!!!!!
Thats a demo…right?! The lyrics are cool but WE VIKING FANS ANEED A LITTLE BIT MORE LIGHTNING AND THUNDER!!! Rock it like you rocked the Super Bowl half time show!!!! But hey what do I know..I can’t even really play an instrument! LOL!
All I can say is WoW and Noooooo. But hey I hope the Vikings go all the way…Go Vikings Thank you Dr.FB for letting us know.
PRINCE HAS U ALL FOOLED
“BLACK AND GOLD” Ba-bey!! WHO DAT!!
Okay I love Prince.
And I love the Vikings.
And I even love when he’s so inspired that he writes a song for them.
But OMFG… Please please please bury that ISH deep in the ground.
That was just plain horrible.
I was expecting FUNK and GROOVE and what I heard was…well I’m sure SOMEONE’s got an appropriate word for it. Insert here _____________).
C’mon now, this isn’t something the Vikings fans are gonna be singing and humming as they’re getting ready for the big game….
Dayum, even the Chicago Bears “SuperBowl Shuffle” was catchier than that HOT MESS.
FIGHT song??? Yeah people will be FIGHTING alright… for the REMOTE CONTROL so they can hit MUTE. Dayum.
Dumb da da dumb
You people all need to chill! It’s a fight song for god sakes! Not a Top 40 countdown song!!! For a fight song, it’s freaking cool! Show some support and love to a hugely talented creature that created something out of love for his home team. So sad that there are so many haters out there. Get a life!- Mikki Donavan
My God that song was terrible. It’s rare that I think a new Prince song sucks off the bat but this song is just pitiful. It sounds like this song should be sung at church, not at a football field. If the Vikings play this before the game, it will cause them to lose. Prince, you need to redo this song ASAP. This song needs to be either rockin, full of funk or both. This is NOT gonna cut it. Still love you man!
Just yesterday I was stating how just about ANYTHING he does I like.
Rock & Roll is alive in Minneapolis???Really?!Hmmm? It is the old high school type hymnal fight song.Which is cool for that sort of thing.I think lyrically it is good. But if it is something to be played before or during the game… I am hoping he got another trick up his sleeve! No maraca shakin for this numba! But props to him showin love for his town/team.U win some & u lose some…so what?!Still love him regardless.
Thanks for sharing Doc
Not this dandy!

Yo, dumba$$, Prince created a song for the victims of Hurricane Katrina… why wouldn’t he create one for Haiti? If not, he’s probably already donated without letting the media know.
You’re an idiot!
I love 90% of the music he has released but this is the worst song sing Daddy Pop!! He needs to go back and write something funky to make the heads bob. If the vikings listen to this crap…they will fall asleep prior to hitting the field.
Man, oh, Man!!!
My God how horrible !!!!
OMG OMG I just can’t stop listening to this!!!!! ROTF
Ok, so yes it is a traditional fight song…something I would have sung on the school bus after a game. lol It is what it is.
But Prince needs to get a really HYPED song for this coming Sunday.
Damn this new song is terrible… Sometimes, I feel Prince should retire and stop making crap music like that, man, the chant, the music, that old linn drum beat he already used in 150 songs, how boring is that ? Man go back to the studio and do something fresh! Think 2007 Superbowl Half-time show, that was great
What an awful song! I can’t believe Prince composed that piece of s**!
The arrangements are terrible, the melody is horrible.
Prince, hopefully you have something a lot better under your sleeves.
Sorry P, ‘taint happenin’. The Crescent City will not be denied, we’re pulling out all stops. That includes the snappin’ turtle tamborines!
Who dat?
The GOOD STUFF for sure!! Thanks for posting ,doc.
LOVE for one another ppl
wow
Thanks Doc ! xoxo -c-c-
Prince is showing his love for his hometeam by writing a hymn in traditional, american tradition. That’s really sweet.
It’s meant for the Vikings ya’ll not for Prince- ” fans “.
GD Mrng /Thank U Doc & Mr. Prince.
Mr. Prince if U read this I like the song but mayb U could create another 1 with a more up beat tempo. A song that will give them fearce energy, ya know get really pumped up.
. U / Doc. FB 1/2 A great day and thanx again 4 this lil treat.
Later
Chow
These responses are hilarious! It ain’t that serious people!!! Geesh!!!
Hello Mr. Nelson:
Of course, I appreciate this pectinate, poetical composition; mainly, because it speaks directly to the Sea Rover: especially as you repetitively write “r”, denoting the “Argonaut” who is a Sailor.
Vikings are Sea Rover Norsemen plundering the coasts of Europe in the 8th and 10th centuries”(MW;2000), whose history is so pivotal to understanding what you are conveying.
Denoting “elegant” to mean “elect”, shows how spiritual the fight and warriors are at forming oncoming victories.
Lastly, how you relate the Vikings horn is wonderful, because the horn is a body of land or water shaped like one.
The entire song is relatable to heaven, healing, and so much more for humanity, I recognize.
Thank you again for another gift I use to heal myself.
I love you
Yacamaindian
PRINCE, PRINCE, PRINCE — STOP! I Loved your last album – but I felt like I was in Kindergarden while listening to that song.
If this is not a joke,…. PLEASE Change that up with some Rock! Make it heavy – No Football players want to childrens song before a Big Game!!!
Musgrave – Chicago
its very bad! beurk.
I think it’s mad cool that P took the time to make something but I will not be putting this into heavy rotation on my media player.
Go Vikings !!!
Yacamaindian, you get me everytime. I always enjoy reading your comments/analysis of Prince’s music. I’m feelin the Haitians/Haiti Earthquake throughout this song…very similar to Colonized Mind.
thank you PRINCE and thanks for posting doc

VERY NICE
Horrible….Prince we want something FUNKAY…redeem yourself please.
Oh god…I’ve defended Prince for so many years but this is straight up SHIT! I’m now embarrassed to be called a fan.
OMFG – that sounds like some straight up horrifying intro music to the worst movie ever.
This is just to funny! Hilarious Prince!! You sure saw the future…I can sense it in every word of the tune;)))
nah sorry i gotta agree with most of u! this song is just 2 bad!
it is…dare i say it (i am a die hard fan)…yeah i got 2 b honest: it is crap!
I know it is the gesture that counts, but if i was the Vikings i wouldnt b really excited with this gift LOL
I don’t think this song is bad. It’s different. As far as I can remember- and I grew up on this guy- this is what he allways has done. When you think 7 he does 11. At least it shows character and doc, stick up for your friend.
Or do you also think this song is shitty?
Now let me listen to the full version again.
Hati is going and Prince chooses to do this. Lame. So much for his use of a religion making u a more sensitive person to people. I don’t think being sensitive on a lot of things is Prince’s strong point be he sorta in the middle or a full blown borderline bigoted when it comes to other people’s ideas on religion or lack of it slash what’s life all really about. His way or or rather, the way he’s told to think or the highway. Sorry didn’t mean to vent, but enough of this.
Come on people! This is a “old franchise” football fight song. It’s not a Prince original. This is a local celeb. trying to be apart of the local pro team. I haven’t heard anything by the Marsalis brothers or Harry Connick, Jr.. Now, I’m in DFW, and Erika Badu or “Jessica Simpson” didn’t make us a Dallas Cowboy song. So basically, get off of Prince.
It’s all good merce29. Just friendly banter, plus I understood P’s aural involvement. As for not hearing anything from “our” locals? Maybe you’re not listening in the right places. Tell ya what, Boudin and TurDucKen on the house (free) if the Vikes pull this out. French Quarter IS the place to be!
Who Dat?
I love Prince’s music. He is a genius. This has been the only time that I know of since I liked him that I wanna throw up. Seriously, this was not even worth the CS it was recorded on. Shouldv’e dumped it in the Lake, any Lake would do! All I can say is WOW and not in a good way obviously.
Most of u morons must have never heard a traditonal football fight song. Being a long time Prince fan and even longer Vikings fan I love the song. Some of u probably never heard the Hail to the Redskins or the disco version San Diego Super Chargers song from the 70’s. This is a masterpiece for years to come.
So much pressure to be the best and push the envelope and when you dont find favor, youre ridiculed to no end. *smh*
Always on your side
LOVE
Kenni:
Thanks for the compliment: and too, your perception is appreciated.
I assuredly know, we both care about Mr. Nelson and his music.
Yacamaindian
I love Prince and his music, BUT THIS IS HORIBLE!!!! I am a huge sports fan, and trust me this will be ridiculed! Please do not let the football fans on Sunday hear this!
Seriousness…after reading the words, its okay…BUT….
The tempo is wrong!!! It sounds like a death march, not a victory march! Make it have a proud military beat to it. Add some repetitive words at the beginning, underneath or in the break. Keep the horn sound. Team and school anthems dont have to rock out or be rap…just be catchy enough so a child at 2 yrs old can repeat it. Thats what missing in this song!
Ive been a Prince fan AND a Saints fan for for over 30 yrs!
WHO DAT YALL!!
I think P is a musical genius and in my top 3 live artists… but that song is AWFUL!
.
.
It’s a football song, what do you expect! Kiss?
@ Janis and everyone else…
Hello! Ive been in TV and music biz and had music theory/history…this is a definition of an anthem and a fight song…
ANTHEM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthem
The term anthem means either a specific form of Anglican church music (in music theory and religious contexts), or more generally, a SONG (or composition) of celebration, usually acting as a symbol for a distinct group of people, as in the term “national anthem” or “sports anthem”.
An ANTHEM IS A SONG!!
FIGHT SONG term
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fight_song
A fight song is primarily an American and Canadian sports term, referring to a song associated with a team. In both professional and amateur sports, fight songs are a popular way for fans to cheer for their team. Although the term “fight song” is primarily used in America, the use of fight songs is commonplace around the world, but they may be referred to as team anthems, himnos equipos (Spanish language), or team songs in other countries, such as Australia, Mexico and New Zealand. Fight songs differ from stadium anthems, used for similar purposes, in that they are usually written specifically for the purposes of the team, whereas stadium anthems are not.
The term ‘Fight Song’ may also refer to a piece of music meant to excite or “pump up” a crowd for whatever reason, such as at a rave or concert.
In the United States, fight songs are especially popular for college and high school sports. Among the most notable are The Victors, Notre Dame Victory March, Anchors Aweigh, Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech, Buckeye Battle Cry and On Wisconsin. However, several NFL teams maintain traditional songs usually several decades old. Notable fight songs include WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN; Skol, Vikings; Bear Down, Chicago Bears; Go! You Packers! Go!; Fly, Eagles Fly; San Diego Super Chargers; Hail to the Redskins; Hey, Hey Tampa Bay, and the Detroit Lions’ traditional fight song “Gridiron Heroes”.
Hundreds of colleges have fight songs, some of which are over a century old. The oldest collegiate fight song in the United States is Boston College’s “For Boston”, composed by T.J. Hurley in 1885.[1] Fight songs are laden with history; in singing a fight song, fans feel part of a large, time-honored tradition. The following list contains some of the most established and popular in America.
A FIGHT SONG IS A SONG!!
WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_the_Saints_Go_Marching_In
“When the Saints Go Marching In.” often referred to as “The Saints,” is a United States gospel hymn that has taken on certain aspects of folk music. Though it originated as a spiritual, today people are more likely to hear it played by a jazz band. The song is sometimes confused with a similarily titled composition “When the Saints are Marching In” from 1896 by Katharine Purvis (lyrics) and James Milton Black (music).[1]
The number remains particularly associated with the city of New Orleans, to the extent that New Orleans’ professional football team was named the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS! It has been played by Louis Armstrong (New Orleanian), Fats Domino (New Orleanian), Bill Haley & His Comets, Buddy Bolden, and tons of others!
Yall need to know your history b4 talking!!
WHO DAT!!
Prince! You are so wrong for creating this song. You honestly can’t believe this songs boring beat would inspire a team to play hard and win. Come on now Baby, Come on! Return to the studio and try it again. This song SUCKS! And I love Prince and his music (since 1979) but I can’t lie and say this song rocks.
What the f*&% does WHO DAT mean???
Prince fans are whack jobs! Get a grip.
I like! Go Vikings!
As a anthem it is not so bad. As long he doesn’t put it on a new album! I got Graffite Bridge flashbacks….only for playing in the Vikings stadium.
WHO DAT YALL!!! Dat win was for US (Katrina folx)!! Its a BLACK and GOLD SUPERBOWL, Ba-Bey!!! WHO DAT!!!!
