Elisa Fiorillo-Dease is featured in the new issue of Daeida, music-based magazine in Los Angeles. The interview covers her entire career, personal issues, and Prince.
Elisa talks about being produced by Jellybean in 1997 and recording her sophomore album with David Z. at Prince's Paisley Park studios. For months, she did not run into the music icon, then, one day, he was behind the board listening to her music, but not believing it was her.
Prince had Elisa sing on the spot and she blew him away. She then sang on the "Partyman" remix and the track "Love Machine" with The Time. Elisa talks about punching Prince in the arm with excitement and he would ask her to stop. Yet the italian in her would start doing it minutes later.
The 10 page interview is very interesting with talking about the hardships of the music business, personal issues, her marriage, and working with Prince again 20's years ago. Although working with Prince on only one album, she did consider herself to actually be a protegé of his, even though she did hate that word.
We loved seeing Elisa at the L.A. run last year, performing, talking with her after the shows, and even at those late night jam sessions at Prince's house. Seeing her, Prince, and Nikka Costa was quite the funky experience, and we can totally understand her being late to the interview because of it.
Elisa wanted to add this to Drfunkenberry.com:
"I'm working on a new petal to drop from my Little Flower website on May 19, 2012. The song is a jazzy/pop-Sade/Basia-type song called "Share It With You" that I wrote and co-produced with Jazz trumpeter Tony Guerrero.
I am currently in the process of shooting the video (styled by clothing designer Richard Hallmarq and directed by Adrian Soto -both the song and video will be released on May 19th, 2012. (My ten year wedding anniversary:o)
We think it is pretty safe to say that Elisa is "On The Way Up" 21 years later.-DocFB
What a night. Janelle Monae opening for Prince and guesting with him on stage and then......after midnight....Stevie Wonder! The icon took center stage with Sheila E. and Prince to a funky rendition of "Superstition" to the crowd's delight.
Stevie jammed on harmonica and did lead vocals with Prince and Sheila backing him up til Stevie wanted to play and they lead him to the keyboards as Prince played bass. Amazing.
Ahh.. But it wasn't over! Shortly, after 2 a.m., Prince and Janelle Monae took over the Forum club with Shelby and the NPG.
Prince played drums over the track DJ Rashida was spinning to kick it off while the Prince's band and Janelle's got into place.
Shelby was asking the crowd how are they feeling over "Can You Feel It" by the Jacksons. "If you don't wanna party, I'm gonna give you 2 minutes to leave" Shelby said and let them know some "Brown Skin" was going to be happening up in this place.
"Til the sun came up" was the chant Shelby started n it continued almost until that time.
After the chant it led into, "It Takes 2" with a funky bass solo by Ida Neilson. It continued with "Got My Mind Made Up" with Prince on the boards and singing. Prince then went to the far end of the stage as Janelle came up with a cool hat on.
Janelle sings "It's like a river...love is not a fantasy..." very heartfelt.
As Janelle gives it up for the NPG, Prince finds himself behind the boards again as the band kicks into "Stratus" then "Superstition" with Shelby J. on lead vocals. "Brown Skin" is finally unleashed on us.
Deacon Prince asks if sister Monae wants to say anything and she replies "I just want to say I've seen the light." Prince and Morris joke around saying "Amen" and "Hey Man" and then Prince is just cracking jokes left and right like it was about to turn into comedy hour at the Forum.
" Janelle Monae and Stevie Wonder. Stop the presses. Tell me I am not in heaven." is Prince's only reply after what was just laid down. A freestyle from George 2.0 as Janelle Monae and Shelby perform "Outstanding" with Prince smiling and having a good time.
Prince, Shelby, and Janelle leave with chants of "Til the sun came up" ringing through the club.
What a night. Eddie Murphy, Paula Abdul, Taylor Dayne, Sanaa Hamri and others were enjoying the night.
As we were there Prince news was being told to us that we want to share:
Prince will be attending the American Ballet Theatre Gala in NY on Monday. Prince and the NPG recently donated $250,000 to them and it is being reported that the musical directors are in meetings with Prince. We are sure they are not talking bout what their favorite salad is!
Prince will be playing the North Sea Jazz Festival and Poland. All other dates that have been talked about, we cannot confirm with Prince's people. We know we are slow to post shows outside the U.S. but until we get confirmation, we do not like to put the dates out there. We apologize but it is better to be patient with overseas matters and get the correct information.
Hope you understand.
Prince will be returning to Los Angeles after a week in Fresno and San Jose. The dates that will see 21 Nights return is May 27th, 28th, and 29th, for Memorial Day Weekend.
There is going to be more Inglewood swinging and we wonder if any more club shows like what happened at the Troubadour this past week. A Doctor can only hope.-Dr.FB
Diagnosis: Was I really on stage tonight?
This past weekend partying with Prince was just awesomesauce! I mean, even Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale, all of No Doubt, Kirstie Alley and her "Dancing With The Stars" partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy had to party with him as well.
Gwen Stefani performed with Prince, which you can see HERE and then her and the entire No Doubt band including her husband Gavin Rossdale danced on stage. OK, Gavin not so much but Kirstie and Maksim were dancing on that symbol stage like it was an elimination round on Dancing With The Stars.
The fun did not stop there. On the 7th night of Prince's record-breaking 21 night run at the Forum, he had one of his classic after show's there. Before the fun started, Kirstie and Maksim were having fun dancing anywhere and everywhere, even doing dance break-downs.
They left before the after show but not before I talked to Kirstie about doing a story on her. Kirstie is looking great and I was a fan of her run on "Cheers" and not really a fan of the Sam & Diane run. Sorry, Woody. Adrian was at the after show for about a minute with his beautiful wife Nina. I didn't see much of No Doubt.
For those that stuck around, Prince did instrumental renditions of "Endorphinemachine" and The Time's "The Walk" along with other after show favorites. We will have a full set list later.
For more photos on Gwen & Kirstie, jump up n down with us HERE!
Here is video footage from Prince's 21 Nights In L.A. featuring surprise guest Gwen Stefani (Who told you first) performing "So Far, So Pleased" with Prince.
This footage is from The Forum.
Check it out above n let us know what you think.-Dr.FB
Diagnosis: So Far, So Fine....
So is this a marketing ploy by The Forum? The forum posted on it's Facebook Fan Page yesterday that Gwen Stefani of No Doubt will be performing with Prince Friday or Saturday night. Well, Friday passed and..no Gwen. So that would mean....tonight, right?
Tonight will be the 7th night of Prince's record-breaking 21 Nights In Los Angeles run at the Forum.
What we can tell you is that Gwen rehearsed with Prince and the NPG at the Forum almost 2 weeks ago for several hours, so it is supposed to go down and was planned.
An unreliable blogger who shall go nameless reported that Prince and Gwen were performing that night when actually it was just a rehearsal.
We have a feeling it will NOT be the Prince and No Doubt songs in existence but actually one of Gwen's all time favorite songs by the Purple One..and perhaps a few more guest spots.
So far, Prince has had Ledisi, Mint Condition, Larry Graham, Chaka Khan, Sheila E., and Alicia Keys take part as his special guests either as an opening act or a surprise performer.
I am not going to lie, I would LOVE to see Prince and Gwen perform. Will it happen?
Follow us on Twitter tonight as we will be LIVE tweeting from show n will let you know if Gwen plays: Twitter.com/Drfunkenberry -Dr.FB
Diagnosis: Gwen Or Not, Prince Is Gonna Rock The Forum
Update!! Gwen did indeed perform with Prince, doing "So Far, So Pleased" with Prince for the first time,
She also came out during "Cool" and Gwen along with the entire No Doubt band and husband Gavin Rossdale came out to dance during "Jungle Love".....
Prince has just announced that he will be continuing his 21 nights in L.A. by doing 3 Forum Dates this weekend, April 28th, April 29th, and April 30th. Thursday, Friday, Saturday respectively.
Tickets will be going on sale Tomorrow, April 26th, at 12 Noon pacific time. That is just a little over 48 hours before the first show.
Tickets will still be $25.00 and Mint Condition will be opening for him on Friday, like they did last week. No word yet on Thursday or Saturday's opening acts or surprise guests. Chaka Khan and Larry Graham were Saturday's guests (Chaka was also opening act.) and Alicia Keys was a special surprise guest.
Since Prince's Forum run started taking place, it has been a who's who of Hollywood going to see him such as Matt Damon, Lea Michele, Justin Timberlake, Tavis Smiley, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardiem, and more.
Prince is the ultimate performer and even with tickets going on sale at such short notice, we are sure the Forum will be filled, just like your prescription of funk.-Dr.FB
Diagnosis: If You Have Plans, You May Need To Break Them
OK, if you haven't been trying to get yourself to the Forum in L.A., which is already going to a be historic run of 21 Nights In L.A., where Prince has been performing his hits and many more through 3 shows already, he made you pay for it last night.
Prince started performing "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" at his piano while someone was being risen center stage. The voice sounded before the lights went on her, but Miss Alicia Keys was singing the Prince song she covered while he played for her.
During the 2nd verse, which is what is posted above, Prince and Alicia turned the Prince classic into a duet. How long will this video stay up though? You may want to watch a few times just in case. We love and respect Prince and we felt we needed to share this with you. Hopefully, by not posting a full version (yet) it will be cool to keep up for now.
Prince said he had a big surprise in store for tonight. All of No Doubt was there last night without Gwen Stefani. Hmm.
Also at the show was Cuba Gooding Jr., Sheila E., John Stamos, Rosario Dawson, Glee's Lea Michele and at Thursday's show, Justin Timberlake, Magic Johnson and more.
L.A. and Hollywood's best are coming out to see the one and only, the Purple Icon, Prince. We hear it's only going to get better.-Dr.FB

Hold on 2 your wigs, y'all! It's about 2 get funky. - Dr.FB
Diagnosis: L.A. Will Never Be The Same. Never!
Update: I want to send an apology to Prince and his camp and Drfunkenberry readers. We were sent this fantastic image over the weekend along with other information. Unfortunately, it hit an old email address and was not posted/shared as quickly as we normally do. This problem has been taken care of n the Dr. takes responsibility on his end n rest assured, as soon as we get info, it will be shared with DrFunkenberry.com
For those that missed it when we exclusively told you that PRINCE was going to call into Lopez tonight and announce that he will be doing George's show next week, and kicking off 21 nights at The Fabulous Forum, here it is.
L.A., it's about to get funky. Um...can you pass some of that footspray over?-Dr.FB
Diagnosis: The Puerto Rican Brother From Another Mother Is Ready
Update: Notice how we say he will be kicking off the shows at the Forum. Reason why we did not say all shows is not all shows will be at Forum. Will update as info becomes available...
