Tiger Woods Gives First Interview Since Coming Back To Golf

Posted in Celebrity Gossip, Celebrity News, Entertainment, Sports on March 22nd, 2010 by drfunkenberry

“It’s a private matter” Tiger Woods says several times during an interview that aired on ESPN. You have to give it up to him for even doing interviews. I woulda just went back to playing golf n that’s that.

“I saw a person that I never thought I would become.” Hmm.

“That was not how I was raised.”

Seriously, a good interview. What do you think of what Tiger said?

Is it all good and over, or so not a hole in one?-Dr.FB

Tiger Beat: Why Tiger Woods Leaving Golf Is A Smart Move

Posted in Celebrity Gossip, Celebrity News, Entertainment, Sports on December 13th, 2009 by drfunkenberry

When this announcement from TigerWoods.comcame on Friday, it sent shock waves through the golf and sports world;

I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try.

I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What’s most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.

After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.

Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period.

First, he admits to his indiscretions, no matter if it was 1 woman or 100 women, and it might be closer to that 200.  But the leave of from the world of golf, is the big thing.  The PGA is going to hurt.  The ones who paid to air golf events or sponsor those events are going to hurt without Tiger Woods there.  Face it, the ratings are just not going to be there.

We all know the story, before Thanksgiving of this year, Tiger Woods was Mr. Clean, the hero of millions world-wide.  Then it seemed like the 12 days of Christmas, where instead of a gift, it seems like another woman would come forward to claim she got a hole in one with Tiger Woods.  TMZ covered Tiger Woods the past 3 weeks more than they ever did in their existence.  In fact, so did I, and every other blog site.

 To ESPN’s credit, until that voice mail leaked, they went with the car accident story the entire time.  Why?  They know how much Tiger Woods means to them.  ESPN of late had turned into a sports version of TMZ but they wanted nothing to do with the Tiger scandal until they could not ignore it anymore.

This is why Tiger’s move to take a “hiatus” is so smart on his part.  Whether he can fix his marriage or not, and can you really after getting it on with more than  a dozen women, people are going to back off of him.  It comes to the whole he has admitted what he did and apologized so leave him alone.  It turns him into the victim in all of this.  Brilliant move.

I take no pride in writing about Tiger Woods and his affair, even though we wrote about the story before the TMZ’s of the world caught on.  Yes, I made Tiger jokes.  Everyone did.  Sometimes, the private lives of a celebrities, albeit movies, music, and sports, become public foddle and it is times like this I do a gut check of what I do and just how scandalous I want to become.  It is the line of being a blogger and a reporter of reporting news or sticking with gossip.  Sometimes, the gossip becomes the news and it was in this case.

The golfers who were criticizing Tiger will now see how life was like in the golf world before Tiger.  Gone will be the coverage.  Gone the nice things that went along with Tiger being on the circuit.  Only one player could have this effect on a sport and it is Tiger Woods.  The NBA suffered a huge loss when Michael Jordan left the Chicago Bulls, but they had Shaq, Kobe, Wade, and Lebron save them rather quickly.

The golf world will not lose Tiger for that long and I will be shocked if he is not back for the Masters in April, but the press release of  the hiatus, and with no real return known, Tiger is taking his clubs and going home.  Now, if only Tiger’s woman could disappear, the coverage would fully stop.-Dr.FB

Prince Funks Up Montreux; Pop Culture

Prince performed 2 shows at Montreux over the weekend as we told you first a while ago.  From what we have seen, it was a success.  Would we expect anything less from him?

He did 2 90 minute shows and a few songs twice. Rumor and rumor only has it right now that the songs were done twice for a possible DVD release.  Wait…what happened to that Coachella DVD?  Well, we will see.

Prince performed classic tracks as well as new ones from his latest 3 CD set.  Heck, for good measure, he even did 2 songs off his protege’s CD.

Prince was also all over pop culture this week.  From a mention on “The Colbert Report” on Monday to 2 mentions on ESPN’s Espy Awards. Samuel L. Jackson even dressed up as Prince during the award show, circa the Purple Rain era with purple studded jacket and wearing those “I Would Die 4 U” pants.  Mr. Jackson. Whew. Later in the show, Quarterback superstar Peyton Manning pretended to have a conversation with Prince over the phone.

Even the Home Run Derby had a Princely moment with Prince Fielder won the Home Run Derby with some music by, you guessed it, Prince playing. Not to mention every tacky sports journalist using a Prince metaphor on that night’s news cast.

Prince, the pop culture icon and the Montreux funk man, all in one.-Dr.FB

Unreal.  ESPN broke news that Shaqulle O’Neil was traded to the Cleveland Caveliers.  He didn’t find out thru ESPN. Someone Twittered him he had been traded.

His response;”I didn’t hear that yet.”  He then found out it was true. Earlier this month, it was Twittered that Kevin McCale would not be kept by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Shaq to Cleveland makes them now the preseason favorites.  Lebron James & Shaq? Oh boy.-Dr.FB

In a new interview with ESPN, Alex Rodriguez has admitted to the use of performance enhancing drugs when he played with the Texas Rangers between 2001-2003. He told Peter Gammons:

“When I arrived in Texas in 2001, I felt an enormous amount of pressure.  I felt like I had all the weight of the world on top of me, and I needed to perform — and perform at a high level — every day.

Back then, it was a different culture. It was very loose. I was young, I was stupid, I was naïve. I wanted to prove to everyone that I was worth being one of the greatest players of all-time. I did take a banned substance, and for that I’m very sorry. I’m deeply regretful.”

This report is from ESPN;

MANCHESTER, England — The International Olympic Committee and two of Michael Phelps’ leading sponsors expressed support for the Olympic great Monday, a day after he apologized for being photographed in a British newspaper inhaling from a marijuana pipe.The IOC said Monday it was confident Phelps would learn from his “inappropriate behavior” and continue to serve as a role model.Luxury Swiss watchmaker Omega termed Phelps’ actions a private matter and “nonissue.” Swim wear manufacturer Speedo called the 23-year-old American a “valued member of the Speedo team.”"Michael Phelps is a great Olympic champion,” the IOC said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press. “He apologized for his inappropriate behavior. We have no reason to doubt his sincerity and his commitment to continue to act as a role model.”Phelps acknowledged “regrettable” behavior and “bad judgment” after the photo appeared Saturday in the tabloid News of the World.Speedo gave Phelps a $1 million bonus for his record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics. Phelps joined Speedo in 2001, a year after making his Olympic debut in Sydney. He dominated the Beijing Games in the company’s high-tech LZR Racer suit.”In light of Michael Phelps’ statement yesterday, Speedo would like to make it clear that it does not condone such behavior and we know that Michael truly regrets his actions,” Speedo, which is based in Nottingham, said in a statement to The Associated Press.”Michael Phelps is a valued member of the Speedo team and a great champion. We will do all that we can to support him and his family.”Omega said it was “strongly committed” to its relationship with Phelps, calling his Beijing accomplishments “among the defining sporting achievements in the history of sport.”"The current story in the press involves Michael Phelps’ private life and is, as far as Omega is concerned, a nonissue,” the company said.The News of the World said the picture was taken during a November house party while Phelps was visiting the University of South Carolina.
