Funk It: Exclusive Interview With Malina Moye

Posted in Interviews, Music on February 22nd, 2010 by drfunkencherry

DrFunkenberry was lucky enough to get some time with funk/R&B artist Malina Moye. If you like ol’ skool funk, we recommend checking out Malina’s new album “Diamonds and Guitars” – it’s full of great guitar riffs, funky grooves and strong ballads. Listen to a couple of tracks below.

Malina grew up in a family of musicians. Mom and Dad played for the band The Techniques and she considers George Clinton, Whitney Houston and other funk legends her cousins. You can see and hear their influences in her music, from her “upside-down” guitar playing ala Jimi Hendrix, to the waa-waa riffs of Prince and funky grooves of Parliament Funkadelic.

In the interview, Malina talked to us about growing up funky, meeting legends like Prince and Michael Jackson, belting out the national anthem before thousands, her Dad’s crush on Sheila E., and what she has in store for this year. You can download Malina’s “Diamonds and Guitars” from Amazon or iTunes. Enjoy – Dr.FB

Who Dat? It’s Sheila E.

Posted in Celebrity News, Entertainment, Music, Sports on January 25th, 2010 by drfunkenberry

Sheila, you are so wrong!  But…it’s kind of funny.  Sheila E. made a “fight song” for the Saints late last night where she dressed up as her friend Prince.

This was obviously in response to the fight song Prince made for the Minnesota Vikings late last week.

“Dig If You Will The Playoffs….” is how it starts with a little purple beat.

Let me know what you all think.  Highlarious.-Dr.FB

What decade is this? Prince and Sheila E. performing together on
television, sexyretrocheekychic set straight outta some funky 60s
lounge, and a band made up of players from Prince’s past and
present… The Ellen performance was too cool for words. You gotta check it out!

When you see the performance n set up, it will make more sense and was a great performance and look from the purple one. That guitar was too sweet.-Dr.FB

Sheila E. Has Gone A Bit Country

After deciding to compete on CMT’s hit show “Gone Country” she sat down and spoke with her mentor, Prince.  After explaining to him why she wanted to go country he told her, “Okay, mama knows best”.

Prince was right, Sheila won the third season of Gone Country with her gospel inspired song, “Glorious Train”.

“All I could say was thank you Jesus”, Sheila said of her win.  The experience in itself has moved me so much, that was just as big as me winning.  Its been an amazing experience”.

Ms. Escovedo plans on spending more time in the south.  Congrats Sheila :)

Prince Throws Down His Own Symposium Of Funk

Posted in Celebrity News on March 1st, 2009 by drfunkenberry

Prince brought the funk with him to the Conga Room.

“Oldskoolcompany” kicked off the night again. Was that “Gett Off” I heard on guitar when going into the groove a few times? Slammin’!

At one point during “Musicology”, a dance party took place on stage with the likes of Tavis n Dr. West just straight getting down. You had to see the dance he was doing during “Play That Funky Music”, it was just too much.Cedric the Entertainer n Jesse Jackson couldn’t handle that.

Sheila E. Looked freaking amazing in a purple dress n killed it with “Glamorous Life”. Ooh la la.

The website was being shown off by one of the tech guys n people were allowed free reign. It seems like it should launch in March and some pretty killer footage is on it. I suck at mac’s so my experience was limited. ;(

Here the party may be continuing at 77……

More coming later. Oh yea how did those in attendance like that Coachella footage? Ok I said too much. See you all soon.-Dr.FB
