Jerome Benton has been a member of The Time/The Original 7ven over the past 30 years. He has also been a play-writer and will be debuting his new play "HIIH" in Minneapolis this summer.
In an interview with FOX 9, he talks about "HIIH" which is short for "I Want To Go To Heaven Because Hell's Too Hot".
"‘I Want to Go To Heaven Because Hell's Too Hot' -- it's a morality play," Benton explained. "It's about false freedom a young lady who's out there bad. She's turning all the spiritual light off in her life. It raises the hair on your back, creates goose bumps. It'll put a tear in your eye."
Jerome also talks about if people will be disappointed in the play with him not portraying the image of the side-kick and mirror holder. I will say this; those that know Jerome and are fans of Jerome, will not be disappointed.
Jerome comes from a good place. With the name change (Which is not even a focal point of the story, wow! What a concept.) and with Jesse Johnson leaving the Original 7ven. He is genuine. That is part of his charm.
According to Fox 9, Tickets go on sale in late June. The play is set to hit the Pepito's Parkway Stage in Lake July. Benton does plan to continue performing with The Original 7ven and currently spends his time between Minneapolis and Los Angeles.
Much Love & success on this Jerome. Miss ya man.-DocFB
Diagnosis: From "side-kick" to center stage....
Earlier this week, PRINCE released a rehearsal jam exclusively to drfunkenberry.com of "Mutiny/Ice Cream Castles" a response of sorts to if former bands in his Purple Court could open up for him in Australia.
Paul Peterson aka St. Paul of Fdeluxe (Formerly The Family) received the track before anyone else last week....and responded in play to his former boss. They felt Prince was having a little fun with the band, so they thought they would return the serve.
Fdeluxe is Paul Peterson, Susannah Melvoin, Eric Leeds, and Jellybean Johnson.
The response? "Hot Summer At Menards." Menards is a home improvement store in the Mid-West for those that may not know.
Hmm. "Hot Summer" is a song that Prince gave to the radio station The Current in Minneapolis in June of 2010.
Do they have any garden tools? What do you think of Fdeluxe's response to "Mutiny" and will The Original 7ven/The Time respond as well? We don't think so, but you never know. Will you be going to any "Hot Summer" sales? No? Ok then.
Will Prince respond to this response with an even funkier rehearsal jam? Stay tuned........-DocFB
Music icon Prince sure has a sense of humor. Along with a musical message to The Time/Original 7ven's Terry Lewis, he sent the video above. This video is too funny. "Thumbs up for rock & roll?" all right then.
When we first saw this video, I was like Waa?.... but by the end, it had us laughing.
Not only was this sent to Terry Lewis but also Paul Peterson aka St. Paul who was in the Prince band, The Family, who now call themselves FDeluxe.
We chatted briefly with Paul about things and will have some very cool stuff coming your way soon, including that new rehearsal jam that PRINCE sent his and our way. Seriously, we cannot wait to give it to you. Sometime this week, we promise!!!!!
Speaking of opening acts, we have heard of some other possible opening acts for dates on the tour;
Delilah and Janelle Monae just MIGHT be in the purple live experience.
What did U think of the video message?
Who do you want to open for PRINCE?
What did Terry Lewis think?
2 be continued and answered......sooner than U think!-DocFB
It seems the band formerly known as The Time may be the band formerly known as The Original 7ven as Jesse Johnson has announced he is leaving the band.
Jesse Johnson took to his Facebook Fan Page to make the announcement;
I don't really think I'll be performing with the Original 7 (or The Time if your nasty) any more! We simple don't see eye to eye on anything. Love the guys, but I feel in my heart it's "Time" to walk away while we're all still friends. May Peace be you.
Jesse Johnson Bey ♥
Wow. So, I am wondering if this will derail all plans for a tour and to promote the album in 2012. I mean, how can you tour as The Original 7ven when it would actually be 6?
The band announced their reunion earlier this year and with the reunion came the name change as they no longer could be called "The Time" due to Prince owning the name. All this ground work and a funky album and......now this.
We wonder what the other boys in the band think of this news?-DocFB
Diagnosis: Time To Fix Your Clock......
The Original 7ven, the Band Formerly Known As The Time will be performing on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno tonight.
The band's new album "Condensate" is in stores now and they will be performing "Trendin'" on the show tonight.-DocFB
Diagnosis: Somebody bring me a mirror....
Here is the very first public performance of "Trendin'" by The Original 7ven aka The Band Formerly Known As The Time.
"Trendin' is the first single off new Album/CD "Condensate" by The Original 7ven, which just came out this past Tuesday.
They brought the funk to Club Nokia last night. This was also the first concert that the band went by the name The Original 7ven.
We had a good time last night but had to stop dancing to make sure we got some good video footage and photos for you.
Here is a closer look shot by Cody aka The Funky White Boy that has a more fuller sound and more footage of the band, as my camera was not picking up the bass.
Not sure why my camera did not pick up the bass in the mix as much but at least the footage is good. Perhaps can switch out sound later.-DocFB
Diagnosis: We About To Make History
In the 1st show as The Original 7ven, The Band Formerly Known As The Time took us to "Strawberry Lake" to kick things off.
They then went into a multitude of hits featuring "Get it Up", "The Stick", "Cool", Jerk Out", "Skillet", "777-9311" and "Trendin'"(video coming soon) the latest from the Original 7ven.
Donnie Simpson introduced The Original 7ven, noting it was the very first show with that name.
Aside from a sound issue at first (It is Club Nokia, so it expected) The OG7 brought it. The band also played "Fishnet" and "Oak Tree" 2 songs released as a solo artist by Morris Day.
In the middle of the show, Jesse Johnson took over to show he is one of the baddest guitarists in the land. Performing "Free World", Can You Help Me?" and "I Want To Be Your Man" along with some great solo work accompanying him with Jerome Benton coming out a time or two.
The band then went into "Gigalos Get Lonely Too" and then bringing up quite a few sexy socialites if I do say so myself.
They closed with "The Bird" and Jungle Love" which left the crowd condensating for sure.
It was a high energy show and it was great to see all of them perform together. My first and only time seeing them all together was for a taping for The Tonight Show With Jay Leno a couple of years ago before their shows in Las Vegas.
Coming up next for the band whose new CD "Condensation" dropped this week, is The Tonight Show With Jay Leno October 27th, along with upcoming shows in Minneapolis and New York.
These are some of the greatest musicians in all the land. The term real music by real musicians most def applies to them. Please support real music by buying the CD and just like them, we are sure you will be "Trendin'" soon as well.
Thanks for the love guys and the great show.-DocFB

When I ran into the Time in August, there was no mention of a name change. All they told me is that everything is coming together and its time, for them, to return.
In mid-September, it is announced they are now called The Original 7ven (The band Formerly Known As The Time) and have a new album, "Condensate" which is out now. The Original 7ven consists of all the original members of The Time, Morris Day, Jimmy Jam. Terry Lewis, Jesse Johnson, Monte Moir, Jellybean Johnson, and Jerome Benton.
A member of The Time calls me about the name change. "Ahh. We got you on that, didn't we? We were able to keep it a secret until we wanted it out there."
