A Discussion On Prince In 2013; 3rd Eye Girl; A New Site?; Paisley Park Performances?

Prince NPG Records 2013

Last night, I did a spreecast with host Seth Everett on PRINCE in 2013. Me and Seth had these before where we just discuss things on Prince and what is going on. With 4 songs being “leaked” a few days before, people were thinking there would be breaking Prince news instead of a discussion of things.

Now, wouldn’t I put the big news on my site or advertise the spreecast here? I tweeted and facebooked it only. Still, expectations ran high.

I can understand that when it comes to Prince, people’s expectations run high, even though it said for a couple of days it is going to be a discussion. No special guests. Will there be some things asked and shared? Yes. Expectations many times lead to disappointment when nothing was ever promised.

If you wish to access the spreecast, you can do so HERE.

Some interesting things were discussed and so they did not get lost in the mix, I figured we could discuss them here and allow some input from you the reader.

Topic #1. I wanted to debate the pros and cons of “free” content. Let’s say “3rd Eye Girl” was/is posting unreleased content without permission. Shouldn’t 3rd Eye pay for what they post? Then say the NPG could pay all of the employed producers of the content. n 19-member band paid annually is no joke. We all have bills to be paid.

Topic # 2. A discussion of a new web site. With so many of the Prince community hooked up online would and could the fans get together and start their own NPG MUSIC CLUB (Prince’s successful subscription and membership service used back in the early 2000’s), pool their $ and vote on what type of music they want?

Meaning if they wanted new songs, rehearsals, material from the vault, complete live shows, certain videos. This way, it skips the need of I-Tunes and other 3rd (sic)parties. If the fans created a network similar 2 Facebook, a fee could be given to the NPG and they could just fill the order, pay those deserving and stop all the lawsuits in one fell swoop. Thoughts?

Topic # 3. IF “3rd Eye Girl” turns out to be a band member, say the NPG’s newest additions Hannah Ford or Donna Grantis, what should be the disciplinary action taken? In the past, former band members have leaked material. Perhaps more thorough background checks are needed.

Topic # 4. Andy Allo was indeed the co-producer of the CD Superconductor. I was in the studio first-hand to see that happen. It is jointly owned by NPG and Alloevolution.

Of the all the artists that worked with Prince, Andy was one of the few who did not follow guide vocal trax originally laid down by Prince. Only the 3 songs that Prince co-wrote were produced in this manner. Andy is extremely talented and a quick-learner. She refuses to punch-in individual songs and rather goes back 2 the top when necessary to get a performance that she has sole approval of. She was given an unlimited budget by NPG to fulfill her vision. The results are something all of us can be proud of.

What do you guys think of “Superconductor”?

Topic #5. Paisley Park. The soundstage at Paisley Park is currently under renovation. It looks like Barbarella meets Sweet Charity. Are their any new fans that wanna experience late-nite parties at Paisley Park? What’s a good cover charge that everyone can agree on? Yes, Prince will be there.

Now, I want to state these topics do NOT cover everything that PRINCE will be doing in 2013. I think it is safe to say (But I am assuming)we could expect a new album with some good promotion by it, a tour (Where n when would be determined at a later date.) and so much more.

When these Paisley Park shows would take place is not exactly known. As it states, Paisley is under renovation. That could take a while. He just wants to know that when it does open, what do you feel should be the cover charge?

I think it is a good start that he is thinking of another web site but wants the fans heavily involved this time. Perhaps so the NPG is held responsible for what content is provided. It shows the Internet is NOT dead. It shows that social media does serve it’s purpose to some extent. I think it shows that he doesn’t want to be completely accessible via Twitter or Youtube and would use it when he feels it could benefit him and not a “3rd party”, so to speak.

I was going to put up a poll but I think it is best served if you answer the questions and perhaps when we have more of a general idea, we could do a poll with the most popular answers. I thank you for your time.-DocFB

Diagnosis: Surrender expectations. More things then will be fulfilled.

#2 he’s fallen right behind on the Internet, he needs his own site where we can buy the music. Just put it out there and we will buy it, should have done it years ago.

As for a fan website pooling money….don’t be silly lol

I have a comment on the subject of Prince’s reluctance to release dvd’s to his fans. Doesn’t he realize that if only would release professionally filmed DVDs to the public (with copy guard) people would have no need to seek out the bootleggers, or make unofficial copies. Personally I would much rather buy a good quality dvd directly from Prince via his own website store, than to hand over my money to a bootlegger for a less than perfect quality dvd, just because that is all that is available! ;)”

I have to quote John here and want to co-sign especially this part of his post:

“The best thing you could ever do would be to tour the world as a solo artist, because people love you for YOUR talent, not anyone else’s in your band or any protege’s… YOU. Sit at the piano or the guitar and let the world hear who you truly are.”

It is generous of Prince to give so many other talents a chance to shine by being in his band, and personally I can enjoy any form of band he performs with – whether it is 5 or 15 people. — But it is true, that it’s really YOU Prince, who most of us care about and want to see live!!! You, your voice and your guitar is all we need – and you make everyone else on the stage disappear! All we want is YOU! No one compares 2 U! Never.

What a great comments from John. Prince have amazing fans, having a privilenge 2 get 2 know some of these incredibly kind hearted loyal souls I think it’s wonderful from Prince 2 inquire input 2 his future plans.

Housequake was a really cool site and the idea with working 2gether with fans would bring the best of Prince 2 people who really understand the vastness of his musical abilities. The site should be run by people who really know their stuff and Prince should make a commitment with it and treat his emplyees with respect and get rid off his massive desructive control freakiness.

    One Love

Prince (like any other musician with official/un-official content on YouTube) will never be paid outright for publishing music on this channel. That’s not to say there isn’t money to be made in putting up good quality product… social media is essentially people sharing what they love/don’t love with other people, creating a conversation without any barriers and boundaries. This isn’t the great evil that Prince seems to think it is… he has very little to lose by putting up content that he doesn’t intend to put in to an “official” product and sell anyway (i.e. the latest concert clip of ICNTTPOYM). He’s not losing anything and would gain a serious amount of new fans and gain a massive amount of interest in going to his concerts and giving him more opportunity for ticket, album and merchandising revenue. I don’t like the way that this always comes down to money, it should be about the MUSIC and sharing his talents with the world so that he’s appreciated. The comment on whether the content would help contribute to paying his touring band/entourage/tech/management is a bit cheeky… i’m sure they’re making enough to get by.

Topic # 2. A discussion of a new web site. With so many of the Prince community hooked up online would and could the fans get together and start their own NPG MUSIC CLUB (Prince’s successful subscription and membership service used back in the early 2000’s), pool their $ and vote on what type of music they want?

    – Prince fans already had a great site. Housequake.com. The only people/person that didn’t want it to exist were the people who it was trying to celebrate the work of. You can’t have a relationship with someone if only one of you shows love and trust, dig? Enough said.

Thoughts?

    – Again similar to my response of the first point this is again coming down to money which is the key reason why Prince wants to go a different way to iTunes: He doesn’t make enough money from sales on iTunes vs the provider (iTunes) and the transaction managers (credit card companies). The truth of the matter is if Prince is going to avoid using iTunes (the leading music distribution model on the planet) then he’s going to sell less albums/singles and de-crease his fanbase by making it harder for them to purchase his material.

I’ll say it agin – if you don’t let people hear you through the channels you expect (as per the situation with YouTube) then don’t expect to make the wads of money you are after because both sides aren’t getting anything they want, which is a whole lot worse than getting a little bit of what you need.

Secondly – setting up a separate an online website / marketing / social media distribution model is an extremely expensive exercise (I know, I do it for a living) and will likely only be of use to hard core fans who have only so much money in their wallets. Times have moved on from an era where it would be acceptable to the wider fan base to pay Prince directly for the material and then have to go to the trouble of uploading it to their devices in a really painstaking way through iTunes (for example)… people just don’t want the hassle in the fast-paced world of online of having to do that. The best way to get people to hear your material is put it up through the channels that already exist, get people to pay for it through the online stores (so you at least generate some revenue) and deal with the thousands more fans that want to come and see you in concert as a result (what a nice problem to have). The other consideration to this is whether it is worth Prince’s time and investment to maintain a separate site/distribution model. We all know how that panned out last time (…and the time before that). Prince will always be better off just dealing with the music. Put out great music and people will always want it if they can get their hands on it easily.

Topic # 3. IF “3rd Eye Girl” turns out to be a band member, say the NPG’s newest additions Hannah Ford or Donna Grantis, what should be the disciplinary action taken? In the past, former band members have leaked material. Perhaps more thorough background checks are needed.

    – I’m not sure what to say apart from if Prince doesn’t want his material leaked then keep hold of it. If she is then who can blame her for releasing it… PRINCE SHOULD BE HEARD. Actually I’m quite dumbfounded over this whole scenario which just seems like a complete waste of everyone’s time.

    – Not sure why this question is relevant to the previous points but I haven’t heard it all the way through, but on the outset it seems like Andy should go back to a more acoustic style that suits her more than a funk-orientated one. I’m not commenting more because I haven’t heard the entire album. There’s not much reason to do so, I’m a Prince fan and a fan of good music. There’s plenty of good music out there that I’d buy before Andy’s album unfortunately (sorry Andy).

    – I live in London. Bring the soundstage, I’ll bring my ears (and yes Prince, I will bring some cash for you and your band as well.)

In closing, it really is all about the money now? Thought there was some pretty strong stuff in the bible about greed? When was the last time Prince actually challenged himself as a person and also musically (vs. challenging the fans/industry)?

Sometimes the biggest hurdle to overcome is yourself, the rest will follow. My advice to Prince (and you can call me up anytime if you wants to – i’m actually a really nice guy I’m just frustrated friend! – not in that sense!) is the following:

Open your ears to today’s music and today’s music lovers. Don’t bury your head in the bible when there’s so much more to learn and so much more to see. Have more trust in people and appreciate that when all is said and done you won’t leave this earth with the cash that you made or the women that you parade, all that you will have will be the love that you made through your music. Music has taken you all around the world, but if you close you eyes to what’s infront of you then well, you just won’t see. This life could be over in a blink of an eye, don’t let your last moment be sending a c&d. The best thing you could ever do would be to tour the world as a solo artist, because people love you for YOUR talent, not anyone else’s in your band or any protege’s… YOU. Sit at the piano or the guitar and let the world hear who you truly are.

    Thanks for you time 🙂

Doc, thanks for the detailed information. I love that Prince is (indirectly) communicating with us through you. :o)

What stands out for me in all that you wrote is the possibility of Paisley Park parties! It would be a dream come true to meet Prince in his very own purple Kingdom! I mean – what could be better?! What would I pay for that privilege? – A lot, because it would be a once-in-a-lifetime-experience for me, given that I’m from Europe. – And that’s the thing: in order to make this possible to experience not only for those fans who live in or close to Minneapolis, we would need an announcement many weeks (better even months) in advance!!! Prince likes to do things last minute, so I don’t know if that would work out. ;o)

The thought of a website is certainly exciting, too. Especially since I missed the NPGMC days completely (unfortunately), and I like the idea of getting videos and new music for download – shared by Prince himself, not by fans who “stole” the material. I would gladly pay for that, too.

And this would be my main message to Prince: we appreciate he is thinking about these things, and it makes me happy that he is reaching out to his fans! What it comes down to is that most of us would gladly pay for anything he officially releases – CD, DVD (like the RNR Affair Single recently) – just please, Prince, make it available!!!!

Yes, he and the NPG should get paid for their work as everyone else, and it is not alright to upload unauthorized stuff. BUT – we all jump at the chance of getting any Prince material, and if there is nothing officially released by him we go and get it otherwise. He could prevent that by releasing his own stuff!!!!

Finally – I like Superconductor and think Andy is very talented.

A huge thanks to Prince for starting out this year with so much excitement in the purple world!! 😀 I love going online every day and checking what’s new. Like “what is he doing next”? He loves to play with us and surprise, and I am one who is happy to play along and be surprised! THANK U PRINCE!!!

    1. If 3rd Eye Girl is posting content without permission then they firstly shouldn’t do it, and if they do they should seek permission to or provide payment for doing so. I say this knowing compensation for putting out someone else’s music isn’t really a viable option, so the real only solution is not to put things out she has no right to. I also say that these pieces were put out on YouTube which is not a download service but a content provider for viewing. You dial up what you want to see and watch. You don’t own or keep or download anything, so her putting it up through a streamed service that only allows you to watch and listen is different but the principle remains that she shouldn’t put anything up without legal permission.

    2. Sounds like a good idea but being fan-run isn’t appealing, however being fan-guided is. I loved the NPG Music Club. It worked and we could download music because we paid for it. I have a gripe that most of my paid-for music disappeared when keys for the code started disappearing but that’s another issue. If Prince sanctioned and authorized someone to do it who was on his payroll and answerable to him in case that person messed up and misused the trust of fans or their personal information then I’d sign up. I understand this means an outlay cost to Prince but then figure that in a subscription cost so the model is self funding. Also I don’t always want to download or stream music. I’d like the option to purchase limited edition stock of CDs because I like having a physical CD as opposed to streamed or downloadable music. Also doing it the way proposed by DrF is not going to cater to his whole audience but only a certain segment. Some people see him live every show but don’t download any music. They find the CD and buy it, or the vinyl. Some are fans who want mostly live stuff and so would demand that whereas others like some of his other joints. Prince’s music is universal and appeals to so many on different levels. You can’t tap into them all and offering them a restricted selection decided by vote of others and going with the majority may alienate and leave those who don’t go with the masses out in the cold. Just like NPGMC had music for sale and you could buy what you want, I’d prefer that.

    3. You can’t run a background check on who leaks material. If they leaked something and it’s in their agreement they won’t do so it’s the same as stealing, so they would be fired. I don’t want anyone fired so I hope in this case they are given a punishment of not being able to play a few shows or take a solo away from them which is bad enough for any performer on stage!

    4. Superconductor is an organic resource that keeps on giving. Its success is deserved and it continues to be discovered by more people. I welcome this output and also the support the project has received from Prince in allowing Andy to find her own voice and become a real “people pleaser”.

    5. $25 entry charge for locals and for those of us like me who may fly in from the UK to attend if there are week long celebrations like previous year’s I’d pay $100 for a weeks worth of shows. If Prince wants to attract new fans keep it cheap enough for new people to experience what everyone else has been talking about for years and for others to bring their kids. If he wants us hardcore supporters to come out there and fly across the world for him we would, but please make it affordable and work out a good package deal.

i dont need free content!! i would pay BUT there is nothing to buy! No Superconductor cd in any store – no vinyl of 3121 – no 20ten in any format – but i have old npgmc music that i cant listen to because of the obscure formats! every prince fan WOULD BUY A NEW CD EVERY MONTH – but there is non. but i wont pay for another bad downloadservice… Prince do me a favour: give your fantastic material to a distributer and make it available in normal stores!!!

Hi Doc, from a french fan (u know we’re thant u can ever guess ;). Somes simple thoughts on the P. projets.

First of all, yes we need and we want new celebrations @ Paisley Park (or whatever it may b called this time) BUT it has 2 take different forms.

It can b one-off gigs annonced @ the very last moment (good 4 fans livin’ in Mpls or near-by) and it must b sometimes (let’s say one or twice a year @ least 😉 a real celebration like Prince did in 2002.

I mean a real whole week (not a week-end uh ?) just because…we have 2 cross half of the planet 2 come from France or Europe or anywhere else in the world.

We can come, we can pay, we can enjoy the thing like nothing else in the world (’cause we’re dreamin of this for decades) but it CAN’T b just for one night.

It has 2 b a whole trip, the real deal, the real sharing thing, u know a different concert each night, some games with the possibility 2 choose one or two numbers for the show by the winner (including outtakes numbers without going 2 jail ahah !!

And well I pick Moonbeam Levels and A place in heaven ;).

What else ? all the rest !

The possibility 2 interact with the musicians, the Man himself (no forget it, bad idea, we just can’t ;), the opportunity for (bedroom 😉 musicians like me (who listen 2 P music since I’m 14, and I’m 42 now) 2 play with P and the band in reherseal for a few minutes (or even a few seconds 😉 : the dream of a lifetime. 4 real.

The possibility 2 listen 2 unreal original music in a special room (like a bit of private reherseal sessions between Miles and Prince, if it exists or things from the Flesh sessions).

Same for video shows, a room, our ears, rarities, everlasting memories.

What would we b ready 2 pay 4 this ?

Well a reasonnable fee I guess ;), just keep in mind that we’ll have also 2 pay a lot of other people 2 realize the Trip (flight tickets, hotels, fruit cocktails, lady cab drivers and so on..).

Let’s share real experiences, that’s what we’ll keep in mind after all, we already have tons of fantastic Prince music, the man has given so much on record.

If is not confortable with the idea 2 give his music 4 free for the moment it’s ok 4 me, especially with the tons of haters fooling around on the internet, BUT the superverybasic idea of just sending real albums with fantastic artwork in a physical form stays the best I guess.

That’s what most fan are dyin’ for. The Object. A f… thing u can hold in ur hands.

Ok it cost money 2 produce but nothing comes 4 free.

First u invest and then u make profits blablah.. And sometimes we HAVE 2 accept things the way they r or @ least the way they evolve : nobody can turn the sun off, nobody can stop people 2 upload valuable contents on the internet and share it freely (@ least on the actual state of technology).

If people could download food 4 free, most would do it, and restaurants would b in pain. The economic models have changed in a radical ways.

Artists win NOTHING with the internet, BUT the web providers have made billions of profits on it (allowing people 2 share and download contents 4 free).

They should b the one 2 pay a part on the internet fee (we give them monthly) 2 artists.

It’s called global licence, u know Prince.

And then everybody would b happy, artists could earn money again on internet music and we wouldn’t b the “bad downloaders” etc…

And anyway, it’s not and it can b just about money. We all come go, we all go. We love your art Prince, if u love 2 share it with us, I think we can fix that in a way or another.

We have already done this 4 decades, we can make it again.U have achieved such a fantastic carrier (4 us it’s just part of our lives, well I’ve seen u on stage @ least 30 times I guess, last time @ restaurant “La Société” in Saint Germain des Près with my fellow friends from Marseilleflow3r !).

And by the way, never ever forget than 99% of ur lovin’ and dedicated fans are just super poors compare 2 u (ahahah). Hey I’m not kidding. So let’s share some funk, good God uh !!

I would be happy to pay for music on a new site, but you should be able to listen to a stream of a part of the track before purchasing, like on iTunes. I think it should cost roughly the same too. There could be a Premium Club charge which got you extras, video steams and first listens etc, but rather than excluding potential new fans by having a blanket membership fee, everybody should be able to buy the majority of the tracks on the site like they do on iTunes.

In terms of Paisley Park parties, I would pay silly money BUT I’m based in the UK, so like many fans I would need to factor in travel expenses so I think the tickets should go for around $150 for a night. BTW, I thought the music that 3rdEyeGirl put out was amazing, total return to form and very, very exciting.

If you want to make music… do it for the music, not for the money.
You know we are all interested in unreleased stuff, because we love to listen to what you created. You know we will pay for it if you would ever release it on a website in good quality.

If you want to get music out there, use that website or iTunes… otherwise we will grab it for free, yes. That’s because we love you and your music. We love to listen to it, it lightens up our days.

If I had fans like you, Prince… I would feel blessed. Not trying to joke around with them and asking them about money. Get your act together.

It’s not rocket science! The people who you have surrounding you should be focused on your brand just like you are. You’re Prince for god sake you can go anywhere and hire anybody, play with anybody, play on any stage. For someone as genius as you, it shouldn’t be that hard to figure out. You are a innovator and people like to follow trends. So set one that people can respect!!!

They make the person pay for. #2- I am not a computer person but I would be happy to help to make it a real site. # 3 Well whomever took the material member or not member needs to pay somehow and if it is a band member I would make sure this person is monitor and check there background perhaps ??? if is a band member I would have trouble trusting this person again. Thank U for letting us know and asking us our opinion . The best for the renovations at P. Park and best with this person that stole the 4 tracks. Lots of Love Live 4 Love.

Hi folks its Josh the Aussie from the Spreecast.
I would just like to add to what I said on the show about having heard & enjoying the outtakes/ leaked material over the years – I WILL BE HAPPY TO PAY FOR IT IF PRINCE HIMSELF IS WILLING TO “RELEASE IT!”
And if the NPGMC returns, I will be at the head of the queue to sign up.
But I think a quarterly or yearly membership would be rad.
However the idea of only allowing us to see DVD releases at Paisley Park?
Well, that would be tough for folks outside of MN or the USA for that matter.
If that is true, that is obsurd.
YES I have the Montreaux footage, & it is by far the best live performance i have seen on film by the man. (i’m also a mark for that band, incredible line-up!)
I have shown friends & they are blown away. These people are not Prince ‘fans’, they just love great music & wild guitar playing.

As the 40th anniversary of “Elvis Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite” approaches, which was viewed by an estimated 1.5 billion people at the time and countless billions since, perhaps Prince would consider a similar sort of televised concert performance…and then much more in the future… By reaching out to fans via the farthest reaching medium, Prince could avoid the many corrupt individuals/institutions that get between artists and their fans.

I already answered the questions in an earlier comment, but on the subject of how much fans would pay to see Prince perform at Paisley Park, I hope he considers the state of the economy and that many of his older fans have families to take care of. If it were just me and I had a fantastic high paid job, I would pay $700 but that is just not realistic. I think $70 would be a reasonable charge for a one night show, and maybe $300 for a 3-day weekend. $250 for the 7-day celebration in 2002 was a fantastic deal but it was still a very expensive trip when you add in airfare, hotel, rental car and food costs for a week, so a 3-day event would be more affordable for a lot of people. Thanks 🙂

I too think Prince just did this “Leaked New/Old Music” to make a point about how quick people would download unauthorized music etc. It was an experiment so to speak. He likes to hold demonstrations to prove a point. LOL

In terms of a website — if I were able to hear a stream ( a whole song, not 30 sec.) and like it I would probably buy it for a fair price in line with other sites. I wouldn’t feel right paying say, $2 when i-tunes sells singles for 99 cents. But I think it should be free like other sites. If he invented some new outrageous music downloader that tooks seconds to download quality sounds I would pay a one time fee but it would have to be compatible to download/upload/interact with my other music.

And, no more late parties for me. Too late, ya’ll youngins have fun.

I know a whole a lot Prince enthusiast like myself who buys every release and goes to every concert within a hundred miles. Hell I live in Texas and have travelled to New York and other places. I’ve joined NPG Music Club, and the rest internet ventures. I know there is at least 2 to 3 million people that fell the same. We go to the after shows, pre shows and back to back nights especially if different material will be played. Most Die hards would enjoy the concerts and know every lyric to songs that were not singles. The only reason why people even get bootlegs because the material is not available. I would purchase every concert tour DVD if it was available as well as any unreleased music and I know a lot of people who feel the same.
