Prince Talks About Michael Jackson’s Death

In a french interview, Prince talked about Michael Jackson and was asked about his death and how he felt about it.

The  english translation was posted on Prince.org, a Prince fan web site and here is a few quotes;

“When I played in London in 2007, the O ² Arena, I asked the producers what had been the record number of shows played consecutively in their venue. They said six. I said that I wanted to do twenty-one. During two weeks they refused me, nobody had ever played for so long. All concerts were nevertheless sold out. Since then, Michael Jackson showed me that I should go farther.”

When asked about performing the Jacksons “Shake Your Body Down To The Ground”, Prince added;

“My singer Elisa has the same timbre as Michael when he was young. And a good song is a good song.”

Lastly, the question that many people were wanting to know; How did Prince feel about the death of Michael Jackson?

(Prince, obviously reluctant, does not want to dwell on the subject.) “It is always sad to lose someone you loved.”

Well, there you have it. What do you think of Prince’s comment(s) regarding Michael Jackson?-Dr.FB

    I like both but they have different styles and that’s what everyone seems to misunderstand. Comparing Prince and MJ is like comparing apples to oranges. The two were different and great entertainers in their own arena. Or let’s say compare MJ to Elvis……can’t do that either. Understand where I’m going with this?

    I definitely agree. I wish that they did work together on a duo. It definitely would have been a HIT!

    I just wish they would have gotten a chance to work with one another. They are both such musical geneses in their own way. R.I.P MJ

    I was a teen in the 80s when both Prince and Michael Jackson were at the top of their game. While many of my friends were making a big contest of who was better, Prince or Michael, I loved them both because they were both great entertainers. I believe that both have excelled in the industry with their own style of music. In my opinion, the two were never comparable because they were different. This is what I think most people are missing…..they did not have the same style of music, therefore the two could not be compared. As for Prince not making a statement about Michael or saying so little about Michael, that’s not unusual for Prince. Prince has always and always will be a very private person as Michael was. Prince has never put his feelings out there for all to see and I don’t think any less of him for keeping his feelings under wraps now. For the journalist who keep trying to make something out of nothing, I have NO RESPECT for that type of journalist. I was deeply hurt by Michael’s passing because he was a great entertainer and the world has lost a wonderful talent. But, I don’t dwell on it. That doesn’t mean that I don’t care, as well as others. The same for Prince. Leave him be!

    Prince and Michael were the two best artists of our generation. Both took from the greats and added their own styles to it. We should be glad that we had them both. We need to stop always looking for negative issues. I’m sure that Prince, just like everyone else was very hurt by the news of Michael’s death. Yes they were aware of what the other was doing musically, but the both respected each other’s talent. Don’t mention Madonna, Bruce Springsteen or Elvis. Not in the same league at all with those two. The media made them out not to like each other. I’m just glad to have witnessed them both perform. They are the two best, period.

    for a moment it almost sounded as if the interviewer wanted Prince to make some absurd comment surrounding MJ’s death. in this day and age of tabloid journalism i certainly wouldn’t doubt it.

    i think Prince answered the question the way it should always be answered. MJ was loved by millions and millions of people. In his death that should be honored and respected.

    Kudos to Prince.

    Prince’s comment speaks volumes. It should put to rest the rumors of Prince and MJ being in some kind of rivalry. Like all of us, Prince loved Michael. All of the speculation on the sincerity of Prince’s comment should stop. Only God and Prince know if the comment was truly heart felt or not.
    Also none of us really know if Prince and MJ had friendship. In the end, who are we to judge or question?

    I only wish that Prince & MJ would have colaborated on a song or album together. Now that would have been something that would have lived forever!!!

    I think Prince’s comment on how he felt about Michael’s death was respectful but at the same time, I dont think it was sincere. It just seems so made up to me. Nobody really knows his true feelings though Because Prince has always been so private about those certain issues in his life.It was very sweet of Prince to say what he did about Michael. It kind of shocked me because I always thought that in a way Prince envied Michael because he was his biggest competition and to hear him say “someone you love” that was a shocker. Maybe he do care about Michael, maybe…..

    It’s not if speaking about Michael will bring him back. Everyone deals with death very differently. If you don’t know the nature of their relationship – you can’t speak about how Prince re-acted to Michael’s death. He is not responsible for or obliged to speak publicly about anyone but himself.

    Overall, it sounds like a long-standing bad case of jealousy on prince’s part. Too bad prince had to be such an a–hole and snooty about Michael’s request. Prince should have been honored to have even been asked by MJ if they could work together. As far as Michael Jackson is concerned, how many people do you (as in us)) know who were put on this earth knowing from the very beginning exactly what they were supposed to do with their life? And then did it so fantastically,l and with such passion? A lot of people spend their whole lives trying to figure out why they are here, and can never find the answer. Good job, Michael, good job. And I thank you for all you gave us, your talent and and your love before God called you back.

    hard 2 believe anyone with a ounce of musical knowledge would ever think mike was better than prince. mike was a great performer, but prince is considered one the best live performers of all time. plays multiple instruments, does not need anyone 2 write songs 4 him either. ask a musician’s musician who is better and the answer is always prince bcuz they know how hard it is 2 do what he has done. no one will ever do it again. some of u mike fans r blinded by how much tv coverage his death had. popularity does not equal the truth. loved mike…alot, but he was a one trick pony….kinda like elvis!!!

    I’ve been a Prince “fan” since 1978 and he has never been the type to comment on issues related to another person’s passing or death. So I did not expect a comment from him when MJ died. Furthermore, not everyone commented (from hollywood that is) on MJ’s death. I respect his words and as always he kept it short and to the point. Only God knows how Prince truly feels.

    I BELIEVE THAT PRINCE KNOWS BY NOW WHAT HE’S PROBABLY ALWAYS KNOWN, THAT WHEN IT CAME TO MICHEAL JACKSON,THERE WAS NO COMPETITION,MICHEAL JACKSON #11111111111, HANDS DOWN, ALL THE WAY.PRINCE ISN’T FIT TO BE ROYALTY ESPECIALLY WHEN COMPARED TO THE KING OF ALL MUSIC MICHEAL JACKSON!!!!! I BELIEVE THAT WHEN HE SAW THE OVERWHELMING OUTPOURING OF LOVE AND ANGUISH OVER MJ’S DEATH-HOPEFULLY HE DECIDED TO GIVE UP MAKING ANYMORE OF THOSE RIDICULOUS SONGS HE CALLS MUSIC!!!! FOR REAL Y’ALL KNOW IT SOUNDS LIKE S–T!!! I MEAN HE REALLY NEEDS TO QUIT!! AND AS FAR AS HE PLAYING MJ’S MUSIC AT HIS CONCERTS, HE’S DOING THAT SO THAT THE PEOPLE WOULD STAY OR DON’T KILL HIM FOR THAT GOD AWFUL MUSIC HE’S BEEN PLAYING!!! THAT’S PATHETIC PRINCE, U COULD KISS MJ’S BUTT A LITTLE MORE, DON’T BE A BITCHASS ESPECIALLY SINCE U DO NEED HIM NOW,MORE THAN EVER!!!! BECAUSE WILL THEY TRULY REMEMBER YOU,I THINK NOT!!!!!

    Prince did not comment his child death
    Prince did not comment on his parents passing
    As far as i remember , he has always been reluctant to interviews and givin his point of view through interviews
    One has to listen to his music to know anything
    it has always been his way ( Controversy ( himself) , Sign of the Times (probably the best pic of the late eighties ), the Cross (Third world) , live for Love ( Irak ) , last december ( death and conscience)
    I guess that playin MJ music live is for him the best way to pay tribute to another artist , and if you notice he always cover music from artists that he admires ( joni mitchell , hendrix , rolling stones , sly stone and now M.J )
    Madonna ‘s statement at the MTV awards was definitely the most final and true statement that i v heard so far
    Prince’s statement by playin his music is by far the best statement from an artist to another

    That was a forced answer but at the same time a very nice thing to say. Which leads me to believe that Prince has always loved and admired Michaels songs and music since way back. Even though there are a lot of MJ hating Prince fans (especially in Europe), its pretty obvious that Michael was a Prince contemporary in terms of growing up with the same love of music and artists. They grew up with the same influences and their competition in the 80’s even with the O2 shows, made for some incredible showstopping work – studio and live from both greats.

    @McBrewster oct 17th 6.00 pm

    I can answer that for Jessica. The information is in the MJ biography The Maigic, The Madness, The Whole Story by J.Randy Taraborelli – a real pageturner which I’m reading like RIGHT now .
    Page 354.
    I won’t exactly quote what Michael supposedly said about Prince in Purple Rain – but among other not so nice things he said that Prince couldn’t act and that he treated women badly (in the film).
    I must say that I – if Michael really said that- kind of agree with these observations. Prince is not exactly Robert de Niro to put it mildly, even if he’s a great musician. And I started hating the film when he hit Appolonia.

    But then again; who knows how credible this J. Randy Taraborelli is.

    Well count me in as one of Prince’s fans who was hurt by his non-reaction to the death of Michael Jackson. Since then I’ve gotten over it, and realized that it was more about me and my feelings of loss over MJ than it was about Prince and his non-reaction. I’m glad to hear him say some nice things, play a great Jacksons tune. That was a nice gesture. I will remind myself to enjoy Prince for what he is: an excellent musician, songwriter, and performer. I wonder what european city Prince will try and out-do Michael’s concert record in?

    I watched Kenny Ortega on Oprah too and his story about Purple Rain didn’t pass the smell test. But the anecdote that Michael felt compelled to record his music before god gave the songs to Prince sounded legit!
    So Jessica, please tell us more! How do you know Michael hated Purple Rain the movie?

  • Jessica

    To the person that said MJ loved Purple Rain. If that choreographer was talking about the movie, their wrong. Michael hated Purple Rain, I know he made statements about it in the past, as the album I don’t know, but I assumed since Michael was so negative about the film that he wasn’t too fond of the album’s sexuality as well…..
